Not Ideal

To sum up the 22nd of February, 2026:
The day was not ideal neither for walking, nor for a barbecue picnic.

What gave these two the idea to even try, I can't imagine! (I zoomed them in from afar.)

Yesterday afternoon, it rained on the snow, and then the slush froze over night. I tried a  short walk around noon today; but even with my studded boots on, and two walking poles, I soon felt I had better make it very short...

This afternoon, it has been snowing on top of the ice, and more is to be expected during the night. So my guess is that tomorrow won't be ideal for outdoors activity either.

  1. Oh my goodness. That has made me shiver.
We have had our first Spring-like day today. Sun and light winds ... and our daffodils are out.

    1. JC - Oh, daffodils... Even the snowdrops here haven't had a chance to come out yet!

  2. Then the new snow will hide the ice underneath! Our next-door neighbors have a grill outside their back door, and cook outside even with deep snow!

    1. Ginny - Yep. Thin layer of snow on the ice today, temp just over freezing point, and possibly rain later. Not going out!
That picnic table is popular from early spring 'til late autumn, but I can't recall seeing anyone barbecueing there in snow before (and not even a sunny day!)

    1. Sandra, they must have felt a real need of outdoors grilling rather than using the electric cooker in their apartment!

  4. We also had a lovely Spring like day today . My daughter has just submitted her Phd thesis and has a wait until her Viva next month , so she home for a visit and brunch out this morning - lots of people around and a sense of enjoyment at the sun . The rain and wind has returned with a fury tonight
I hope you start to have spring like days soon

    1. Siobhan, well, it's thawing today - but only just around +1C, so can't say I'm getting the feeling of spring in the air yet...

  5. Better to stay put when it is like that and you don‘t have to be anywhere.
Maybe those two lost a bet!

    1. Meike - or perhaps they were trying to win one?! ;)

  6. That pavement looks lethal. With more snow on top it's a death trap. It's best to stay indoors unless you really have to go out for something.

    1. Addy, I agree - and luckily, I do not have to. At least not today!

  7. That sounds far from ideal and best avoided as far as possible. A barbecue seems a strange idea in such conditions, but each to his own.

  8. Janice, it looks like +C temperatures are about to take over now so hopefully the snow and ice will be gone in a few days. ("Fingers crossed"...)

  9. We've got below freezing temps since yesterday, due to go forward till tomorrow. I'll post about my February picnic too...but it was actually 65 F that day! Just last week! Ah winter time going into spring is such fickle weather.
