I'm sure I'd still have understood it in context - but not if asked out of the blue to translate it into German. In Swedish it's "näckros(or)". (In Scandinavian folklore Näcken is a male water spirit who played enchanted songs on the violin, luring women and children to drown in lakes or streams...) - In general, I think botany is probably a very weak area of my knowledge of German :) In English (and even Swedish) it has improved a little bit in later years through blogging!
