October

There is no doubt about it now: Even with the sun shining in the daytime and green still the dominant colour in most trees, autumn/fall is rapidly taking over now. We have already had one or two frosty nights recently - one of which "took" my two coleus plants on the balcony that had been growing very tall over summer. (I had already taken top cuttings from those for propagation indoors, though.) The pelargoniums (geraniums) are still ok (more protected, on a bench under the window) but it's probably time to start taking those in over night now. The leaves of the tomato plants against the trellis drooping... I'll probably be getting rid of those this weekend, as next week is supposed to be rainy again and the few tiny fruits left probably won't get any proper chance of ripening outdoors anyway.

Yesterday on my walk into town I took these photos of trees and bushes that have already changed into autumn colours:

Maple tree

Not sure what kind of tree this is.

I looked into one of the very beige clothes shops (referring to nearly all window displays just now featuring mostly white, beige and black - as I've written about before). And actually came out of there with a rather colourless item myself - as I happened to find an item from the spring collection rather than the autumn collection that was both something I had been looking for, and as much as 70% off the original price. A thin and light padded jacket (to replace a similar old one that I recently gave away to charity as it was a little bit too tight for comfort). Not warm enough for our winters, but more of an "between seasons" item - for fine spring or autumn days, or even chilly summer.

  1. Autumn is such a lovely season when the sun is shining. It is very windy and chilly here though today, which rather takes the edge off it!

    1. JayCee, in many ways early autumn is my favourite season of the year.

  2. I think I will look for some leaves for leaf mould. Great Autumn pictures.

    1. Thanks Northsider. I cut down my two tomato plants yesterday afternoon and some of the leaves were indeed rather mouldy.

  3. I guess that a Swedish winter feels darker and longer than an English winter. It's like entering a long tunnel and March seems a long way off right now. I wonder if a jacket like that would suit me?

    1. YP, a sunny autumn is in many ways my favourite time of the year - except for the fact that it will inevitably be followed by winter. Winters in this part of Sweden can vary quite a bit though (from mostly rainy to more cold and snowy).

  4. My very first sight of the vivid Sedish autumn colours are something that I always remember - they were stunning.
Our seasons (such as they are) are definitely confused this year and we don't have many trees that change leaf colour - they just turn yellow and fall off. It's still 30ºC+ many days and the thought of lower night-time temperatures is bliss! Long range forecast is still for mid and high 20º's - a few degrees higher than usual.
Love your jacket - it would probably be ideal for winter here, the way the heat is lingering.

    1. Carol, I actually much prefer our cooler autumns to +30'C ... And never felt really tempted to fly off south for just 1-2 weeks in winter, as many do. (A lot of them just seem to immediately succumb to winter colds as soon as they get back home again anyway!)

  5. Beautiful autumn colours, especially against the backdrop of blue sky!
The lightweight padded jacket is a sensible item to have for, as you say, those in-between times.

    1. Meike, sunny autumn days are like nature's own fireworks before going into hibernation :) Both early autumn and spring are times of the year when temperatures can vary a lot during the day, so that dressing in layers is often the best alternative - as you're probably well aware of, with your own habit of going for long walks/hikes!

  6. Lovely colours for my favourite season. Looks like you get more colour than we get here where I live. good idea getting a jacket, temperatures can change quickly

    1. Amy, our autumns can offer an amazing blast of colour when the weather is right (as in enough sun, and not too much rain)

  7. The jacket is nice, and will match anything you wear. Oh, the intense blue of the sky may even be more beautiful than the trees!

    1. Ginny, the off-white colour of that jacket does indeed have the advantage of going with just about anything. I feel I tend to look kind of washed out wearing that colour next to my face though - but that can easily be helped by adding a more colourful scarf...

  8. Beige colour wear is my favorite too

    1. Ro, it's not really mine, but this jacket is more off-white than beige, and can easily be spruced up by more colourful accessories (like a scarf).
