First Snow

~ 10:50 a.m.

~ 2:30 p.m.

As weather forecasts predicted already last week, we had the first snow here today. Not welcomed by me - but I was glad I had decided already before the weekend to take the weather warnings seriously, and postpone an appointment with my dental hygienist - again. (Had already put it off once, because of my knee injury.) "Whether the weather" will be any better in another two weeks remains to be seen... But today I just stayed in!

Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not,
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

(anonymous British poem)

    1. Sandra, I'm not sure I'd want to switch if that was my only choice, as I don't like hot weather either!

  2. Even though you didn't "want" that snow, isn't the first snow fall still something of a magic moment? Like you, I am not keen on snow in town; it makes things harder and turns to brown slush anyway, but seeing those first flakes fall gives me a nostalgic moment of longing, of looking forward to Christmas and the joys of the season.
No snow yet in my area, but in higher parts of my federal state there has already been some.

  3. Meike, I know what you mean. Freshly fallen snow can feel magic - if one is in the right mood for it... Right now it causes me a lot of extra trouble and worries though, so I wish it had stayed away for another month at least!

  4. Have just been outside to check with the thermometer in the sun and it's 19ºC.
The snow looks pretty if you can watch it from indoors in the warmth!

  5. Our snow disappeared very quickly yesterday, though parts of the country are under a blanket. It is always exciting to see snow falling, but the magic wears off very quickly if the snow persists and interferes with life.

    1. Janice, just now it looks like what fell here yesterday will remain for a while - with Saturday as a bit of a wild card that may bring either more snow, or rain...

  6. Great weather poem. It sure is pretty coming down, but snow which causes a bother in one's life is not that great. It takes months for me to see my dental hygienist so I think you're lucky to postpone for just a few weeks.

    1. Barbara, mine is pretty busy too but they have an online system now that makes it easy to check if I can reschedule. And changing 24+ hrs in advance is free, while cancelling the same day is not...

  7. I had never seen that clever little poem before. By the way, there's another "wether" in English. It is the name for a castrated male sheep.

    1. That's one that has escaped me until now, YP. I'm not sure when I first came across the poem above but when I wrote down "whether the weather" the phrase struck me as surely being part of some longer quote... So I googled, and found it; but alas only referred to as being of unknown origin.
