Resting

A rain-free day today, but very grey - until the clouds began breaking up in the afternoon...

I've been having a lazy/sleepy day, and have not been out at all, except for a little while on my own balcony - taking down my trellis ('privacy screen') with the fake leaves (which is not recommended to leave outdoors through winter).  It's lightweight and was just fastened to the railing with pieces of gardening wire; so not even a 10 minutes job, in dry weather. (All live plants out there already taken in and/or got rid of.)

Photo from June 2024, when I bought it

I also haven't really been "doing" anything indoors today; except heating some soup for lunch, washing up a few things, and reading some blogs on my tablet. (Just now sitting at the computer for a little while, putting together this post, though.)

If anyone is wondering what else I do for entertainment when just resting, half-sleeping and doing "nothing", Audible sent me a reminder the other day. I'm pretty sure what Déja Vu book(s) they are referring to with the "at least 20 times". Do you know me well enough to dare a guess?? And do you have favourites of your own that you keep returning to? (audible or text)

  1. I tend to read a book only once. It's the same for me with films. Of course, when I was a student and then a teacher there were books that I had study repeatedly. Although those leaves are plastic, the privacy screen was a great idea.

    1. YP, I think I have always enjoyed rereading good stories, ever since childhood. I still like rereading old favourite classics, whether written for children or for adults - nowadays mostly (re)listening to them as audio books. And I keep returning to certain favourite films and TV series, too.

  2. Nope, with my memory now I have no idea. I wait for the answer!

    1. Ginny, you'll find the answer in my reply to Meike (Librarian) below. I might also do a separate post on it.

  3. Grey days like that seem perfect for quiet comforts and familiar stories

  4. I enjoy having a day of rest especially when the weather is damp and gray. I tend to not read novels a second time since so many are calling to me to read them. Nonfiction, especially history books and Christian books by C.S. Lewis and others I refer to over the years. Enjoy your restful day.

    1. Terra, I love returning to old favourites, and not least books I remember I liked already back in my childhood and youth. But with audio books I've added some new favourites in later years as well.

  5. Hmm... a Moomin book? Harry Potter? Narnia?
You are an avid reader and write very good reviews; several or none of those could be among your "go to" reads.
I have a few books that I've owned since childhood and have read many times, such as the Narnia ones and some by Astrid Lindgren as well as an old-fashioned story book for children, "Das alte Haus" - not the sometimes scary Grimm's Märchen but still Märchen, where animals can speak and there is magic around every corner.

    1. Meike, you do know me well. I love returning to childhood favourites too. Actually I didn't come across the Narnia books until I was in my mid 20s or so, but I have read them many times since. I also have them on Audible now and recently re-listened to them again - but probably not 20 times yet. Just started over (again!) on the Harry Potter series read by Stephen Fry though, and that must be what triggered that Audibe message :) They're among my favourite night-time listening because I know them so well that I don't lose the thread if I fall asleep - while on the other hand, if I have difficulty sleeping, they still keep me entertained!

  6. Like Meike, I guess you re-read Narnia and the Moomin books, with a few Harry Potters for a change?
There aren't many books that I re-read - once read I usually forget about them. Easier to forget with a Kindle than seeing the actual book on the shelf.

    1. Carol, see my reply to Meike! ;) The books I reread nowadays are usually the ones I have (or get) on Audible - many of which are old favourites since before. Besides some children's books I have also collected audio versions of for example some classic English novels by authors like Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Charles Dickens and others, which I also read "thoroughly" when studying English at the university back in my youth.

  7. A resting day is good, to recharge the batteries. I rarely reread books but frequently rewatch old television series.

    1. Janice, I have some favourite TV series I enjoy returning to as well. Recently one British series on repeat on one of my TV channels is Doc Martin, which I always enjoy even if I've seen it several times before.

    2. I seem to remember that "Gilmore Girls" is a firm favourite of yours - and a series I never have watched myself, in spite of it having aired on German TV several times.

    3. Quite right, Meike. Gilmore Girls has been on Netflix for a number of years now (at least here in Sweden) and I've kind of got in the habit of rewatching it in the winter months. Not started yet this year but I might! ;) Love it for clever repartee and loving mockery of American small town life vs upper class snobbery.

  8. It is rare for me to read a book a second time and I have never listened to a book. I did try one to see if I could do it and no, I could not. I found I was listning to the voice and finding mistakes and judging the reader, and thinking I could do better.
I may have read Tarzan and the City of gold at least 20 times in the 5 years I lived in KY. books were rare and each book was read over and over, my age was 10 to 15 years. my adult self read 2 books at least 3 times each. I have watched The Patriot movie 4 times and just added it to the list on Netflix or prime, one of them. I can and do watch movies I like more than once, but the ones I like bob will not watch or there would be more. I could not remember the books you love until I read the answer

    1. Sandra, my habits of rereading the favourites I had access to in childhood is no doubt the foundation of my continued habits of rereading as well.
