Troubleshooting

I can't recall just now what it was that I really intended to blog about today. When I turned on the computer, I got caught up spending hours on "troubleshooting" instead, as the browser that I normally use with this blog suddenly refused to show up any larger than that very small square on the bottom of the screen in the photo above. No idea why. It's never happened before, and none of the tips I googled so far works - either because I can't find (see) the suggested thing to click on, or because clicking on it doesn't help.

I asked AI for advice of course, but it just "pretended" to be helpful:

Key Steps in the Troubleshooting Process:

Define the Problem: Clearly identify the symptoms—what is the actual vs. expected state.

Gather Information: Speak with users, review data trends, and check error messages.

Identify the Root Cause: Isolate the issue by narrowing down possibilities (e.g., checking hardware connections or software settings).

Develop a Hypothesis: Guess the most probable cause based on information gathered.

Test and Fix: Implement a solution, but do so cautiously to avoid making things worse.

I'm thinking that uninstalling and re-installing from scratch might perhaps fix it - but I'm too tired to try to "cautiously implement" that just now.

Luckily my alternative browser used with this blog did work (showing up full size) - but here I found myself logged out from things, so that took a while to sort out as well.

Tomorrow is another day; but then I have an appointment with my dentist for a different kind of  troubleshooting. Back on Friday I somehow managed to lose a very tiny corner of an important tooth, of which the major part is already "fake". I'm not in pain, but I have no idea whether the dentist will find it a simple quick fix or  if it will turn out a Really Big dental job. All I know is that it won't self-heal! - so better seek help ASAP...

  1. Computer trouble shooting, yikes. I can only do it if it is easy. Otherwise I ask my older son. I enjoy using my laptop but don't really know how it works. You figured out a way to post, well done!

    1. Terra, for me too there's a limit to what kind of stuff I dare try myself when it comes to computers. My computer guru through the years has been my brother (professional IT.guy)

    2. ... but as we don't live in the same town, there are limits to what kind of things he can help with. Haven't talked to him about this, yet.

  2. I have printer problems and no idea what is wrong nor how to fix it. I also have dental appointments next week, two teeth needing crowns.

    1. River, much as expected, this turned out to be a big job too - having a new crown made. Lucikly they had time to start the job straight away. Scanning done and temporary filling in place until I get the new crown in 2-3 weeks.

    1. Addy, tooth job started - see my reply to River. The computer mystery can wait as I can use another browser. Haven't used the laptop yet today, on a tablet just now.

  4. So sorry about the program/computer problems. It seems like a lot of simple things I’ve been depending upon have started going beserk. But the fixingjust doesn’t seem to be working either. So a day where I’ve scheduled some things ends up having these new ones to address.

    1. Barbara, yes it's annoying and very time consuming when sth happens that can't be easily fixed.

  5. Computers can be such a bother. I hope the tooth is salvageable and doesn't cause you problems, pain or financial.

    1. Janice, cf my reply to River. An hour in the dentist chair today, preparing for a new crown to be made and fitted later this month. I'm glad it's "fixable" at all!

  6. Glad to read the tooth job has already been started, and I am confident that you‘ll fix the browser problem soon, too. What I often find particularly annoying is when an update of a device’s operating system interfers with apps it has no business to interfere with. We are told to allow all the updates for improved security and what have you, but we are rarely - if ever - warned that some stuff might stop working the way it used to.

    1. Meike, yes, I do suspect the Firefox problem must have been caused by some update somewhere, as until yesterday it worked well for me. I'm not going to bother about it today as I'm tired - and Chrome is functioning.

  7. Oh, computer issues are so annoying and so difficult for us non-techies to work out what to do. I do hope you can sort it out without too much stress.

    1. Thanks Jenny. If I don't get Ffx to work on the laptop again I suppose I'll just have to get used to using Chrome instead. It's just so annoying until one gets all ones usual settings and bookmarks etc right when one has to "suddenly" switch...
