Midsummer Orchid

My white orchid is in bloom again - last time was back in winter, around Christmas/New Year; so not very long ago at all. It normally lives in my bedroom window, but I just moved it into the kitchen instead. The weather forecasts for the week ahead are now predicting hot temperatures - which may make me want to keep both blinds and "blackout" curtains in the bedroom closed more than just overnight...

The Midsummer weekend so far has been a bit "mixed" weather-wise. A massive front of thunder and lightning passed in direction NE over Sweden on Midsummer Day. Just around here we escaped most of the drama, though. It also hasn't been really "hot" yet. But it has still been feeling "clammy", and  I've been having headaches + feeling tired - which I blame on a combination of weather, wind and high grass pollen count (to which I'm allergic). So I haven't been "doing" much. I've been out for short walks but not for very long at a time.

For me personally, because of the allergy (since my teens), Midsummer was never really my favourite holiday. Wise from past experiences, nowadays I try to avoid making any big plans for it...

Just staying home, in town, can actually have its own kind of quiet charm - as a lot of other other people prefer to escape to the countryside or the seaside!

  1. WOW!! I have never seen an orchid this big and fluffy! It is really gorgeous! Some people say orchid growing is easy, some say it is very hard. I do not like summer! Heat and bugs.

    1. Ginny, I've never had an orchid in bloom that frequently before. The other one I have now I don't think has bloomed again since I bought it. They've both been sitting in the same window at least for the last year or two, and have got the same treatment. I've long since forgotten what colour the other one was, though...

  2. You haven't been really hot yet and we haven't been really cold yet, though I did wake up to frosty air this morning, the first of many to come. The orchid flowers are beautiful.

    1. River, I keep hoping that at least we'll be spared the awful heat they're having further south in Europe. I'm not sure I'd survive that as we also don't have A/C indoors.

  3. My orchids sometimes take a year or longer between blooming, and in the meantime I just give them a sip of water once a week. One has come to the end of its natural life, I believe; it was a birthday present around 20 years ago, if I remember correctly.

We're in the middle of the second heatwave of the year; apparently, we've never had such high temperatures in June as right now, and it's going to last at least until the start of next week. 36C during the day and no night cooler than 20-21C, with no A/C at home OR at the office, is quite a challenge!

    1. Meike, I've never had an orchid bloom that frequently before and I've not been giving it any special treatment.
These days my body seems to prefer when the outdoors temp stays cooler than normal indoors temp, so the thought of heat waves like you've had further south in Europe really scares me now...

  4. An orchid blooming unexpectedly on the kitchen windowsill, a few gentle walks between showers, and the rare pleasure of having the town almost to yourself while everyone else chases summer elsewhere.
