As predicted, a rainy and chilly day today - but I ventured out for my usual walk anyway. (Dressed in four layers, with rain coat on top; and rubber boots on my feet!)
The azaleas didn't seem to mind a long, cold shower... :)
At home, I took in my geraniums from the balcony last night, just to be on the safe side... Probably not necessary, as they stand on the bench close to the wall - but I think I'll keep them indoors for another day or so. (I'll definitely not be sitting out there looking at them tomorrow either, according to the weather forecasts...)

I've been taking cuttings from a coleus plant that survived the winter, and planted those yesterday. (They're super easy to propagate.) Some of those will also go out on the balcony later. I'll be keeping them in individual pots as that makes it easier to rearrange things according to the weather etc.
I have never seen azaleas this pretty light pink shade. i love the shot of you all bundled up!! Ginny

ReplyDeleteRo, my balcony is very exposed to the weather, so I've given up trying to grow a lot out there. A few geraniums to look at when I do sit out there are really enough - and some indoors plants can also be moved out temporarily if the weather is right.
DeleteAs far as I know, azaleas and rhododenron originate high up in the mountains in Asia, where it is wet and chilly for much of the time, so that was the perfect weather for them :-)

We've had some rain, but nowhere near enough to create the kind of shiny wet path you show us here.
Meike, it had been dry for so long that even gravel paths evidently had problems "swallowing" all the water pouring down all at once...
DeleteAt least your forecasts seem to be accurate. Your geraniums are beautiful, strong and sturdy. I've just bought some coleus seeds. They're such pretty plants, though I've never been all that successful with them. Fingers crossed this time!
ReplyDeleteJanice, I find that the weather app on my phone is usually surprisingly accurate these days. I even recently scrapped my kitchen window thermometer (with indoors display, but an "antenna" outside) because I find the phone app much more trustworthy now. - Good luck with your coleus seeds. I've never tried growing them from seed, only from cuttings. (Show us your results??)

ReplyDeleteSandra, we've had an unusually dry spring and as I didn't need to go anywhere special, I did not mind a rainy walk for a change! :)
DeleteLoved seeing the wet flowers, and I think their colors are more intense when wet! Glad you saved the geraniums, whether they needed it or not. Mine was inside while I went away for a week and though it was watered, it has been refusing to bloom very well. Now there are buds, but we shall see if it gives big blooms like it had when I paid the big bucks for it. Yay to coleus cuttings!
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I've lived many years in this apartment by now, and have learned from experience that a few geraniums are among the easiest plants to have on my balcony, as I can easily move them around - or take them in if I go away for a few days. - I think it is quite common for them to need a resting period between blooming periods, so do not despair! I find it hard to get mine to survive the winters indoors, though, so I usually buy new ones in spring.

ReplyDeleteWe had torrential rain yesterday afternoon, leaving puddles everywhere. By the time we went on the evening dog walk (around 20:30 [8:30] the sky had cleared and the sun was out. This morning the sun is out and it looks like a hot day for us. We're having such unpredictable weather here!
You look very warm and dry in your wet weather gear!
Carol, here the forecasts have mostly been getting it right this week - which does make it somewhat easier to adjust.
