Magnolia, Daffodils and the Easter Rooster

Walked into town again today (Wednesday). As it got colder again over the weekend (and still), the magnolia tree in the park still looks much the same as it did on Friday.

Back on Friday I bought a pot of daffodils (or whatever name for them that you prefer)* for my living room table; and today I also bought a very small yellow kalanchoë for my Easter Rooster.

*In Swedish we call them 'påskliljor' = Easter lilies

My other Easter decorations will soon be put up as well. This purple rooster does not hibernate together with my other Easter things, though, but in a more easily accessible cupboard with vases and candle holders etc. So he's usually the first one to come out!

(In Sweden, Easter Roosters are more common than Easter Bunnies.)

  1. I love your new cheerful header, and I love Dandelions! Your Daffodils are so pretty, and I really love the rooster. I have never had any luck with Kalanchoes, hoping you will fare better.

    1. Ginny, I find Kalanchoes quite hardy but it's hard to get them to bloom as abundantly again as when one first bought them. I regard them as temporary/seasonal and buy new ones every now and again.

  2. I like your purple Easter rooster and your Easter flowers. I planted a pink magnolia tree a few years ago, they are so pretty, aren't they. I mailed you an Easter card.

    1. Thanks Terra. Yes, the magnolias are always a lovely sign that spring has arrived at last. Can't wait to see the cherry blossom out too which shouldn't be long now.

    1. All the spring flowers are always a very welcome sight after a long "colourless" winter

  5. In German, we call them Osterglocken (Easter bells) :-)
In spite of the draught, it appears to be a good year for magnolias. There are many around here, and they have all been glorious - but I am gad it's not me who has to sweep the fallen petals.

    1. Meike, as you know, I don't have to worry about the gardening duties either... ;)

  6. The Magnolia is beautiful. The daffodils and the kalanchoe in the the lovely Easter rooster are so cheerful. I have a pink Kalanchoe which is a mass of blooms - it has suddenly run riot after not flowering for the two years I've had it. When it's finished flowering I'll cut it back and hope it will flower well again.

    1. Carol, just now I only have that tiny yellow one. Remains to be seen if I get round to repotting it to a larger pot later on.

  7. I like the name 'Easter lilies' - most appropriate. Kalanchoes are pretty but I find that mine soon become leaves and not much else.

    1. Janice, I don't have much space to keep nursing half-dead plants - so I don't. Sometimes some old tired ones may get a second chance out my balcony in summer, though. ;)

  8. my favorite is the Easter rooster, he is adorable and i love kalanchoes and did not know they grow inside. here they do well because they stand up good to the scorching sun. I saw them on sale at Home depot last week. Our other house we have before this one we had a whole flower bed full of red, yellow kalancho.

    1. Sandra, that sounds lovely with a flower bed full of kalanchoe. I suspect that we probably tend to over-water them here as house-plants, and not enough sun in winter!

  9. I never heard of an Easter rooster, though we have lots of bunnies and eggs and daffodils.

    1. Jenny, one origin of connecting the rooster with Easter is said to be Jesus predicting to Peter that "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times". (Mark 14, Matthew 26) There's undeniably a rather big leap from that to today's cheerfully decorated roosters - but on the other hand, why Bunnies should be bringing eggs has always puzzled me even more...!!
