Squirrel zoomed in from my kitchen window yesterday. I suppose he was looking for something edible among the brown leaves. (Whether he found anything, I can't say!)
The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. It sheds its coat twice a year, switching from a thinner summer coat to a thicker, darker winter coat with noticeably larger ear-tufts (a prominent distinguishing feature of this species) between August and November. /Wikipedia/
Looks to me like this one has put on its winter coat!
What a gorgeous little creature. I didn't know they changed their coats for the winter. Our greys are grey all year round.
ReplyDeleteI thought this looked like a Red Squirrel, but the coat was the wrong color. Now I know why. The greys are pushing the reds out all over this country.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have a stable population of Red Squirrels here, and I often see them on the trees around my house or on the ground, sometimes rushing across the road not far away from me. The one I saw most recently on the weekend was still sporting a beautiful autumnal rusty brown-red coat, but I guess it's only a matter of time before it will have to don its winter coat, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little creature - I love the way they use their "hands" to eat food. I've just realised that it's some time since I've seen a squirrel around, poor things have probably been pushed out by the enormous amount of building work in the town. At one time they used to sit on the power cables and I loved to watch them run along the wires. -they were so sure footed.
ReplyDeleteI am delighted that a hedgehog still comes into the garden to steal the cat's food I put out.
love this little guy. so different from hours, yet the same... they are fun to watch, two of ours were playing catch on the front lawn yesterday
