It's been six months since my knee injury back in early October. I've come a long way since the initial stage when the whole leg was blue and the left knee resembled a balloon. But I still depend on wearing knee sleeves on that knee for support, plus using a walking pole/stick when I go out. And I'm still struggling to figure out the "right balance" between "being on my feet" vs resting, during the day.
I'm using two different kinds of knee sleeves. When I go out, or am on my feet a lot at home, I prefer a compression one in synthetic material (on the left below). Luckily, I already had those (having had milder "on and off" problems before), so could use those right from start after my injury. (Which helped to keep the swelling down - and the doctors I saw shortly afterwards seemed to approve.)
After the injury I also bought the grey ones to the right, made of bamboo - softer, "airier" and more comfortable to wear in the night. (I'm actually surprised how much that helps to keep the knee steady during sleep.)
With spring/summer and warmer weather ahead now, I thought it might be a good idea to order yet another pair of bamboo sleeves, as I imagine they may also be more comfortable than the synthetic ones in hot weather. However, when I checked the website where I had bought the old ones, that company did no longer have them in stock...
... But if you have ever googled anything even once, you know that a lot of products will prove to be available from more than one company... (My FB ad algorithms have been actually been showing me very little but knee sleeves and compression socks all winter!)
I found some looking very similar, from another Swedish company, which did seem to have them in stock for speedy delivery. They also seemed to promise to deliver parcels to the most convenient place for the customer - which in this case should have been by "letter" directly to my own mailbox. (As that had worked with similar deliveries from other companies before.) At worst (I thought), I might have to go a covenience shop in my own neighbourhood to pick it up (~300 m away).
Big Groan from me when yesterday I received a text that the parcel had arrived at a (for me) very incovenient shop around 2 km away - across the city centre from where I live, and up a rather steep hill...
Ah well. This morning was neither wet nor windy, and as it was Saturday, the buses shouldn't be crowded. I walked to the nearest bus stop (~300 m), took a bus from there to the railway station, where I changed to another bus that took me (via the city centre) half way up the hill towards my goal. Got my parcel (which could indeed easily have been made flat enough to be sent by regular mail) - and managed to refrain from complaining to the shop assistant (as it wasn't his fault)...
Out on the street again, I decided to try a downhill walk back "downtown". I managed it - but learned that walking downhill still requires "baby steps". So it took a while.
Back down at the bus square (on flat ground by the river), I got on a third bus to take me two stops further along the river; from where I knew it would "only" take me another 15 min or so to walk the rest of the way home.
All in all, the whole outing took me about an hour and a half.
However, the content of the package did turn out to my satisfaction. The new bamboo sleeves (I ordered two) seem to be the same size and quality as the old ones, and feel the same. So at least I won't have to return them - and hopefully it will be a while before I feel need to buy more...

Oh MY! Well, it is good that your knee is well enough to do all of this. And I was holding my breath that after all of this, they may have not been satisfactory.
ReplyDeleteGinny, I was "holding my breath" about that myself, so was very relieved to find - when I got back home - that at least the product itself was what I expected.
DeleteWhat are at adventure and Im so glad the knee sock is just right! However a word back to the company about delivery site might be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteBarbara, if they send me one of those emails asking for a review, I might. If not, I don't think I'll bother. Just make a note to myself not to use that particular company again if I can avoid it...

ReplyDeleteTerra, I decided to take it as another lesson in how to currently make best use of the buses - something that was made increasingly complicated a few years ago, compared to earlier, when nearly all bus lines met in the same square. (Now they don't, which makes it an extra headache to figure out how to get oneself from A to B...)

ReplyDeleteRiver, partly age related for me I suspect, but made worse by my fall back in the autumn. At least the other knee is still "ok".

ReplyDeleteAmy, it may be worth trying. I suspect the bamboo ones are all made in China but sold internationally via various companies. (And not surprised if the sames applies to many synthetic ones.)

ReplyDeleteMeike, these days I'm not sure whether to blame a human or AI for the inability to figure out the "best" delivery option... I much prefer to be allowed to choose that myself; but in this case I decided to trust their apparent confidence. (Sometimes one just never learns, but remains optimistic!)

I arrived at the conclusion that in the end, just getting myself there to pick it up would probably on the whole be less stressful than trying to sort it out via emails and phonecalls and whatnot... (I also kind of doubt if at their end, there's an actual human involved in making the delivery decision these days.) I'll take it as another lesson learned when it comes to double-checking delivery methods (or options) before ordering.
DeleteWell, you got plenty of exercise collecting your parcel. I hope your knee didn't complain afterwards. Bamboo is a very nice material - I have it in pillow slips and underwear.
ReplyDeleteJanice, back home I immediately offered the troubled knee to wear a bamboo sleeve both night and day for a couple of days - and today just stay in and rest. So far ok, and not too much complaining... ;)
DeleteThank goodness they turned out to be suitable! Getting parcels these days seems ever more complicated. One our our delivery drivers just plonks them down outside the front door to our block. Really annoying when they can't be bothered to wait for the addressee to answer.
ReplyDeleteJenny, online shopping and parcel delivery is becoming a jungle. It has happened to me before that I had to go "across town" to pick up parcels, so lately I've really tried to read delivery terms carefully. Seems I still need to be even more alert, though!

DeleteGoodness, what a trek you had, so good to know that you don't have to return them! I don't often buy online, unless I can't find what I want nearer to home, in a local shop.
ReplyDeleteCarol, I don't normally buy all that much online either (not counting my regular home deliveries from a nearby supermarket). With clothes and shoes etc I prefer to be able to see and try things on before I buy. Can't think of any local shop likely to sell these knee sleeves, though...

ReplyDeleteCK, I know there are some places with delivery lockers although I've so far never had to use one (or found that convenient). The problem with the delivery above was that I was neither allowed to choose the method of delivery myself, nor did the company fulfill their promise of choosing the "most convenient" pick-up place. (Convenient for them, maybe! - but definitely not for me!)
