Spring Flowers, Fashion & Memories

Daffodils and pansies in a flowerbed along the ground floor of the old town hall (where there is a restaurant with an outdoors terrace outside).

Two shops or 'establishments' had balloons on display outside - I don't know why.

Yesterday (Saturday) seemed a good day for going into town for a couple of errands. One of them was to hand in a few items of clothing at a charity shop; and thus having things to carry already on my way to town, I took a bus part of the way. (It doesn't save me much time, but it does save me a few steps, which hopefully my knee might appreciate.)

Having disposed of my bag of old clothes at the charity shop, I went across the square to where they sell new ones... And actually found what I was looking for: a long and wide denim skirt, with elastic waist. For summer, I might have preferred it in a slightly thinner material - but on the other hand, being sturdier, it can be used all year round. Anyway, it came close enough to what I had in mind, and I bought it. My main purpose for wanting to add this item to my wardrobe just now is that it will cover any kind of leggings, knee sleeves, bandages or support stockings etc that I might need to wear underneath it...!

I remember when midi/maxi length skirts came into fashion back in my youth - it was 1970-71, when I was 15 years old and in the 9th and last year of our primary school. When the autumn term started, the midi/maxi skirt fashion had not yet reached Sweden - or at least not the town where I was living then. But we had two new students arriving from abroad - two sisters, who had just moved to Sweden from Austria (probably Vienna) - and they both came wearing midi length coats in some red shiny material. And at our graduation, the next summer, I myself was wearing a midi length skirt with buttons down the front, and shorts underneath...

On my walk back home, I was glad to see more spring flowers spreading and brightening up both lawns and flower beds.

  1. What a great skirt! Good job. Very practical. I love seeing the flowers, especially over the grave. I'd always thought it would be fun to push up sun flowers wherever I was buried. But that's probably not going to happen. Fun thought anyway.

    1. Thanks Barbara. Yes, the older one gets, the more need for clothes to be practical! ;) --- I seem to recall actually having seen sunflowers somewhere in that cemetery in summer, I'm not sure if on or in between graves. It will be a few months yet before I can check!

  2. You found the perfect skirt, it will go with every top and as you said, comfortable to wear with compression socks or leggings or whatever. The daffodils are a brilliant yellow. That is good to hear you went on an expedition so your knee is allowing it.

    1. Terra, yes, I can manage a bit more walking now. Still in "better safe than sorry" mood, though - so prefer to keep to well-known paths and not too far...

  3. A good skirt is as important in a woman's wardrobe as a good pair of jeans! Always at hand, and it can be teamed "up" or "down" with different tops and shoes etc.
It's lovely to see the daffodils and crocus! That way, spring feels as if it's lasting a bit longer for me :-)

    1. Meike, so far we're still having a "slow" spring here. And I was glad to find the long denim skirt, it suits my needs just now and as you say, it can be worn with a variety of tops.

  4. Daffodils and pansies complement each other nicely. I like your new skirt. I haven't worn a skirt or dress in years.

    1. River, I mostly wear trousers, and just now prefer wide ones (which are luckily also in fashion). But sometimes a long(ish) skirt can be a good alternative.

  5. The pink and blue balloons look so pretty, no matter what the occasion. It's good that you found what you were looking for- always a plus. It's so pleasing to see flowers popping up, and it's a nice idea to use an old grave as a flower bed.

  6. Janice, successful shopping does usually come with a cheering up factor :) - I find successful getting rid of things no longer wanted rather satisfying as well, though - so am glad that we now (since a year or two) have one such charity shop right in the city centre. I can take a few items now and then rather than necessarily having a big clearout...

  7. It makes sense when clearing out a wardrobe to replace things you have donated. The skirt will be a useful addition to your wardrobe.

    1. Addy, ar this age I'm striving for the reverse: If I buy something new, something old has to go...! 😉

  8. A simple everyday errand turned into a small thread of memory, where a practical new skirt quietly reconnected you with the way fashion once marked moments of change and growing up.

    1. Ro, it kind of turns time upside down to see trends returning that were also popular half a century ago... 😉

  9. Ah, the midi. I had those too, and nowadays any length works. I like your new denim skirt. It looks very versatile.
