Sankt Petri kyrka (St Peter's Church) is the oldest church in Malmö (Sweden) and was originally the only parish church of the city. Construction began in the early 14th century. The church was constructed with red bricks and was built as a Gothic basilica.
The pulpit was inaugurated in 1599.
The altarpiece from 1611 is made of oak wood and reaches a height of 15 metres (49 ft).
A side-chapel is richly decorated with late medieval frescos covering both the walls and the vaulted ceiling, and showing both secular and religious motifs.

Wow, so intricate and elaborate!!! The outside has some very unusual decor. But I think my favorite is the beautiful stained glass windows.

ReplyDeleteI have to say the alter piece is so grand but the paintings on the ceiling are appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteNot really to my taste if I were to be worshipping in that church but it's still to be admired and I'm sure that I'd be having a very close look at the details if I were there.
ReplyDeleteGraham, I feel just about the same. Our visit to this one was rather brief and touristy. But there was also a kind of choral practice going on in the middle which gave a feeling of the mighty acoustics, and at the same time a reminder that it really is a place of worship and not just a museum.
