The sun happened to shine on my "fake" jewellery on display on the side of a bookcase next to my wardrobes, and tempted me to snap a couple of photos.
The word that first sprang to mind for me was "bling". But when checking up on it, "bling" seems to actually denote "expensive, ostentatious clothing and jewellery" - rather than cheap imitations that never in their life pretended to be anything else but just that...
I searched on, and found some more definitions:
- Costume Jewelry / Fashion Jewelry: The standard terms for items designed to complement outfits rather than serve as investment pieces.
- Trinkets: Small, inexpensive jewelry items or baubles.
- Faux Jewelry: Jewelry that mimics real, high-end pieces.
- Junk Jewelry: A derogatory term for very low-quality items.
- Base Metal Jewelry: Jewelry made from metals like brass, copper, or aluminum.
I give up. The items on display above are probably a mix of all that - unless perhaps some of them are so old now that they've become some sort of faux antiques? They're all made of materials like wood, glass beads, ceramics, leather and base metals, though... (The few pieces I have of possibly somewhat higher value are not hanging out on daily display.)
I wear very little jewellery at all except on special occasions - and special occasions these days are becoming rather rare! I look at these items every now and then and think that I should give most of them away to some charity shop, as I so rarely use them. The main reason that they're still hanging where they're hanging, though, is that a lot of them are still associated with memories. (And they aren't really in the way either...)

Memories are priceless
ReplyDeleteYour jewellery is pretty - and takes up very little room - don’t be in a hurry to donate
Siobhan
Thanks Siobhan. No doubt there are other things to donate that would free up more space!! (Lol)
Deleteanother reason they are there could also be they look beautiful hanging there. why hide them away, at least if not worn they are 'bling' for your room. I consider my fairly lights bling, but did not see that in your suggestions.. I like the photo a lot
ReplyDeleteSandra - ah yes. Actually that may well where the word "bling" came into my head from (your recent post about your lights)... Even if I just made the association kind of subconciously!
DeleteThese pieces are simply memory-keepers, catching the light now and then to remind you of moments that still quietly matter
ReplyDeleteThanks Ro. Yes, even if rarely used now, some were gifts from friends, and others I remember buying...
DeleteI like how you’ve captured the charm of these pieces, they really do tell a story beyond their materials. It’s true that even inexpensive jewelry can hold sentimental value, and your collection seems full of character and memories. The sunlight really brings them to life in your photos.
ReplyDeleteThanks Melody
DeleteVery pretty baubles, bangles and beads! That phrase came to mind when looking at these pretty colorful different shapes.
ReplyDeleteBarbara, we have a saying in Swedish that would translate "a beloved child has many names" ... :)
DeleteYour lovely, bright jewelry brightens your room and carry your memories. I have a similar collection in my bedroom but they don't catch the sunlight. I hadn't thought about that. I'll move them today. Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeletePauline, I think it's probably only when the sun is at certain angle that it illuminates mine like that... Just happened to notice it yesterday :)
DeleteI think they are whimsical decor and add an unexpected pop of color.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny :)
DeleteCostume jewellery (I mostly use BE spelling) is the term I am most familiar with in English. Fashion jewellery is literally what it is called in German: Modeschmuck. While I have very few necklaces, there are many earrings and -studs divided into two cardboard boxes with tiny compartments in my bedroom; both originally contained chocolates. The larger box holds my fashion and silver earrings, the other one my real gold ones. I love matching sets of necklace, wristband and earrings but mostly use these only with specific outfits for special occasions. I guess the most valuable item I own is a string of real pearls, a gift from my grandmother which I love but do not wear often.
ReplyDeleteNot wearing earrings or -studs makes me feel incompletely dressed.
Your collection is pretty and as the others have said before me, holds precious memories for you and adorns the room at the same time.
Meike, I copied the suggested definitions from an obviously American AI robot ;) ... I never had my ears pierced so don't wear earrings/studs.
DeleteI like your jewellery display. It's pretty and eye-catching and cheerful. Why not? I wear very little jewellery, but always wear earrings if I'm going out. I like bracelets and have a couple of 'good' ones, but rarely wear them as they get in the way if I'm doing something domestic. I don't often have the need to dress up these days - formal dinners are a thing of the past.
ReplyDeleteSame here, Janice. Very few occasions when I feel need to dress up. I think I did actually wear the long green&silver necklace to a friend's 70th birthday party back in August, though. (As it happens, that one was made by another friend and given to me for my 60th.) Didn't really celebrate my own 70th - well, not with a big party anyway...
DeleteThose do look very effective.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I have never had my ears pierced, so have no earrings. I do have a lot of costume jewellery, so none of it very expensive and bought because I liked the design. It's all stored in a four drawer plastic unit on a shelf in my wardrobe. The only thing I wear every day is my watch and sadly due to my increasingly arthritic fingers I can often no longer wear my wedding and engagements rings.
Carol, I may occasionally wear certain pieces of jewellery when going out in summer - but as in winter I rarely go anywhere where I even take off my coat, there's just no point...! I put on my watch when I go out but that's because it serves the practical purpose of telling me the time without having to check the phone...
DeleteThe bling is lovely (to me anything pretty and shiny is bling) but what I love more is the colours and patterns on the bookshelf. Is that available as wallpaper or shelf paper? Does the design have a name?
ReplyDeleteRiver, that was my definition of bling too - until I started to look things up!! (lol)
DeleteThe background colours aren't wall- or shelf paper but cheap storage boxes (A4 format) of the kind bought in flatpack and then folded. Probably at least ~30 years old...
