We have an expression in Swedish that doesn't have an exact equivalent in English. I would say about these dahlias that they "sjunger på sista versen", which literally means "singing the last verse". Trying to find an equivalent in English, the nearest I come is that they're "on their last legs". (?) - But I guess both expressions can apply: both to flowers still keeping upright, even if some of their neighbours have already given up, and also to trees still hanging on to the major part of their leaves, while knowing the next storm may change that all to quickly...

Grand Finale: "A particularly elaborate, high-energy, or spectacular ending, often featuring special effects like fireworks or a full ensemble."

I like the Swedish version of the last verse, maybe the last hurrah, rather than the last leg! There is some pinnacle reached when its beauty is about to be extinguished.
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I like that - "the last hurrah" :)
DeleteThe chestnut tree is gorgeous. And the trees have such pretty leaves. Your saying is so much nicer than the way it is said here! I love Dahlias.
ReplyDeleteGinny, Dahlias always remind me of my mum, she used to have them in her (their/our) garden. Dug them up in the late autumn, kept them in a dark cellar room over winter, planted them outdoors again the next spring.
DeleteBeautiful trees and dahlias. We have Rowan trees here, we call the Mountain Ash, and we also have Golden Ash and Claret Ash, though I sometimes wonder if the Claret and Mountain Ash are the same tree.
ReplyDeleteRiver, I don't know about different sub-species but I know that not all of the Rowans I see here have leaves that turn as red as the ones in this photo. (One I see from home does not!)
DeleteThe autumn colours are beautiful. The last verse can often be the most rousing!
ReplyDeleteAddy, that's true :)
DeleteThe Swedish version sounds much 'richer' than something being on 'its last legs'. lol. Our leaves will soon be gone. Diana
ReplyDeleteDiana, translation of certain sayings and proverbs etc is sometimes tricky!
DeleteA truly Grand Finale! As you know, here in the south of Germany we are a bit behind you up there in Sweden, but I see a lot of colourful leaves and late summer/early autumn flowers on my walks and from the trains. Today is sunny and mild, and I plan to go for a walk as soon as I can, once work and cleaning are done.
ReplyDeleteMeike, here we've been having a "mixed" week, weather-wise. Some sun in between but mostly cloudy/rainy.
DeleteSo nice your Dahlia flowers are still blooming even though it's Autumn for you, my roses are just about the flower here, have a nice weekend.
