December 5–Down a Rabbit Hole to the 1960’s

Today I opened a box with drawings from my childhood, and found myself falling down a rabbit hole to the late 1960’s. It seems that for a while, around the age of 12, I spent a lot of time documenting the life of a family of rabbits...

I can’t remember now why rabbits; but I have to laugh at these drawings, because they really are a kind of time capsule when it comes to fashion and everyday life. (If you like, do a Google-image search on ‘1968 fashion’ to compare!) And I had a gramophone much like that in my room…

In another picture the ‘teen’ girl rabbits and a friend have gone shopping in town. (REA=SALE) Short skirts, strong colours, big bold patterns. Also notice the text on Lilli’s bag: POP…

 

The Weather

These pictures from my (short) morning walk just about sum it up, I think.  

In contrast to last week's heatwave (with temperatures going up above 30°C), we're now back to about 15°C with stong winds and rain... Swedish summer in a nutsell. (You never know which it is going to be!)

 

In the football field, I saw some birds and rabbits peacefully having breakfast together. 

At first I thought the birds were common magpies (which really are rather common here). 

 But their beaks were too long... 

So they must be oystercatchers. (The Swedish name for them is strandskata = "beach magpie".) They are waders, and not all that common here in the inland. 

I don't think it has rained so much yet that there are any oysters to be found in the football field. But I suppose there might be some juicy earthworms!

Testing

Heard that Windows Live Writer is working again, so just testing. The choice of the rabbits image probably subconscious because in Swedish we often use the term “test rabbits” (försökskaniner) rather than lab rats or guinea pigs… (Please note that no animals were actually harmed in this experiment. The green ‘cables’ are water hoses, I think - picture taken in the old cemetery.)

Watership Down

Does the title give you a clue what to look for in the photo?

Watership Down is a classic heroic fantasy novel by English author Richard Adams, about a small group of rabbits - in their natural environment, but anthropomorphised, possessing their own culture, language, proverbs, poetry, and mythology.

There were six or seven of them grazing in this corner of the cemetery when I happend to be passing by in the early evening. They are very much on guard, all the time… When they hear you approach, they first freeze and sit still, hoping to be invisible. And then if you take one more step - they’re off to hide in the bushes.
