The Christmas Tree

Image may contain: christmas tree, plant and indoor

My little Christmas tree is up again. It is 30 years old - I know I bought it for the Christmas of 1986. It has been a good and faithful servant and has hardly dropped any of its soft nylon (or whatever) needles over the years. It also still has its original chain of lights (a few bulbs changed but I still have some spare ones); and also its original twelve baubles (six red, three gold, three silver). The rest of the decorations have been added over the years. I decorate the tree every year, and take everything off when I pack it down again. And I have probably blogged about it every Christmas since 2009… (For example last year.)

Tomorrow is the Winter Solstice, by the way! Smile

  1. I think I have your tree's twin. No, younger brother as mine is only 24 years old. I really like your star on top! My grandchildren all think it is "cute" and it holds an ornament handmade by each of them. Merry Christmas, Monica.

  3. I think your tree carries invisible gifts, memories, and feelings. On my Christmas tree I use some of the same tinsel that my mother used on our tree in the 1950s. Your tree definitely shows you value time and care. I hope mine does too.

    1. Things can certainly be bearers of a lot of memories, Louise - especially when they've been with us for a long time (like this tree, half my life)

    1. The red stars are made of wood. I've had them a long time, but they are not as old as the tree itself. Oddly I can't remember where or when I bought them.

  5. It's a beautiful little tree, and I am sure it will serve you faithfully for many more years to come.
Of course I went back to last year's post and looked at the collage of ornaments and the pictures of your first Christmas and your Dad's, so sweet!

When I realized this morning that it is the Winter Solstice, I drew a deep, deep breath.

    1. Yes - even knowing that the first couple of months of the year are usually the worst (for me), it is a comfort to know that daylight will soon be increasing again...

  6. I see your tree every year and it always looks so pretty I love the little snowman on it. One of my trees is 11 years old the other one is 15. I had a small tree that we bought and 19 84 but I gave it to my son and his wife and they used it for about 20 years

    1. Thanks Sandra. It's good to know that my little tree has "old friends" out there... :) There are four little snowmen among the decorations, and also four angels of the same size. I remember where I bought those (a shop long since closed). It wasn't the first year I had the tree but not all that long after. Around 25 years ago perhaps. I do remember being happy to find some extra decorations in the right size for my tree :)

  7. My own little tree has not fared as well as yours which still looks so pretty as if it were new!
Very sweet to blog about it yearly!
    Merry Christmas !

  8. It is doing very well to still have all its lights working. But perhaps you were prudent all those years ago getting the spare bulbs! :) Our tree is black with fibre optic needles that change colour. It really isn't cool but we are fond of it and decorate it with the same decorations each year.

    1. Jenny, I last bought a full set of 10 spare bulbs a few years ago, of which I haven't had to use any yet. Haven't checked since if they can still be found in the shops!

  10. I don't think I'll ever get another tree but I have enjoyed more decorations this year. I do like your tree decorations though.

    1. Graham, I've never had a full-size tree in my flat (I wouldn't know how to fit one in!), and doubt I ever will. I enjoy the little one, though! :)
