The Colours of Autumn

Graham recently wrote about Winter (on the Isle of Lewis). Here in south-west Sweden – pretty much on the same latitude on the globe – even if we sometimes get frosty nights already in September, I don’t think of it as winter until the leaves have fallen off the trees, and taken all colour with them. For now, I’m glad to say, we’re still in the full glory of Autumn. Nature’s own fireworks celebration before going into winter rest…

Here’s the tree I see from my kitchen window, Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday this week:

‘Ölandstok’, Dasiphora fruticosa.
In Sweden, this shrub grows wild on Öland (the island off the east coast that I visited this summer and from where I have been sharing plenty of photos recently). But it is also common in gardens and parks around where I live.

  2. Beautiful photos, no sign of Autumn here yet, still up in the 80's even with the hurricane passing by.

    1. Janet, after our very long and hot summer here, I didn't know whether to think autumn would come early (because of the drought) or late (if maybe frost would be delayed too)... All in all, I think autumn so far turned out pretty normal. Just now we have a bit of "warm" spell again for a few days, but not extreme. And the autumn colours are gorgeous!

  3. What a wonderful post today! You take the most gorgeous walks. I really like seeing the difference from day to day in the kitchen window tree. ALL the trees are beautiful. We have no color here yet, it has been delayed due to the unusual weather. Your second picture (the leaves) is one of my favorites. The single red tree is beautiful amid all the green. And the walled path leading to the little church. I just HAD to look up the Fly Agaric. And I was right, it IS poisonous. But it can be eaten after boiling. It is a Toadstool. Do you know the difference? A Toadstool is mushroom, but poisonous. It is also hallucinogenic, and is taken to get high.

    1. Ginny, I would not consciously eat fly agaric even if cooked by a master chef! ;)

  5. Glorious glorious! You make me wish I hadn't left Sweden when I did ... and I want to come in spring too!
I have just heard that my son and his partner will be coming back to New Zealand in 2025. So I have only 6 more years to save up for my next trip!

    1. Oh, long-term planning... Years ahead! :O The problem with planning for a trip in spring is that sometimes it comes early, sometimes late. Not that any time of year is really totally dependable, but spring is probably the trickiest of them all to pin down!
