Weekend Reflections: Bear Hugs

Some more photos from the zoo, from my visit last week.

The bears are always good fun to watch, especially at snack-and-swim time…

  1. These are wonderful pictures! I love seeing the lay of the land, the little shack, and the people lined up watching. You know how to build suspense! Then finally the bears! LOVE the bear swimming, the little gathering of friends, and all their antics. You know how to tell a good picture story!

    1. Thanks Pauline. Not feeling up for long travels, I'm trying to make the most of what's on offer nearby :)

  3. They remind me of the polar bears at the zoo in Stuttgart. I haven't been there since last year when our nephew from France came to stay for 2 weeks at my sister's. The polar bears have a large pool and "rocks" area, and they love playing in and out of the water. Sometimes it looks as if they were conscious of the visitors, and put on a good show for them.

    1. Meike, I get the same feeling with "our" bears - that they don't really mind putting on a show. They do have quite a large area now and clearly enjoy being in the water.

  5. Love your photos. My husband has been collecting bear photos as he wants to make a couple of bear paintings. Would you allow him to use one of your photos for a model?

    1. Of course, Janet! (If he does, please email me back a photo of the painting - or tell me if you put it on your blog.)

  7. I wouldn't want to be in the bear enclosure at any time. That keeper is very brave in my book.

    1. Graham, the keeper wasn't actually in there together with the bears. The bears are locked in a smaller enclosure at the back while the keepers spread out the food or snacks around the rest of the area for them to search and find when they are let out again. And the procedures are similar with all other potentially dangerous animals as well.
