It's been another hot week, also
including thunder and rain showers in the afternoons. (And tossing and
turning in the nights because of still too hot indoors...) But
yesterday it had begun to feel (pleasantly) cooler again. It was the annual Water Day in our City Park by the river (Viskan), with a mix of events (like swim/boat races etc) and various environment information campaigns. I went for a walk into town in the afternoon to have a look around.
Among various local authorities and
clubs, the political
parties were grabbing the opportunity to be seen as well. (We have a general election coming up in three weeks...)
Kubb is a lawn game where the objective is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing wooden batons at them. [Wikipedia]
Raft race on the river. A short but "messy" affair...!
Walking back towards home I was (as usual) more fascinated with shadows, light and reflections in more tranquil parts of the river, though.
Looks like a nice summer day. I liked the roses, the messy rafts, and the reflected trees in the water.
ReplyDeleteThanks Barbara.
DeleteIt looks a fun day out for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI can remember regularly going to something similar to the messy rafts in the UK. It was called Kinky Crafts Race, and more or less anything "inventive" that could stay afloat (or often didn't!) was acceptable. It was great fun for those watching from the banks of the river. Not sure how the participants enjoyed it - the water could be very cold!
Sounds very much like the same kind of race, CG!
DeleteIt sure was a beautiful day to be outside. I would like to try that game
ReplyDeleteSandra, yes, it was a good day for that kind of event!
DeleteWhat a wonderful day; it looks like such fun and perfect weather. and now I really want to play Kubb. I am actually going to look for it on Amazon, I bet the grands would love it.
ReplyDeleteGinny, it's been decades since I played it (and only on a few occasions), but it's a good lawn game for a group of people wanting to "do" something outdoors.
DeleteI LOVE the roses, so beautiful and scented, the rafting event looks like loads of fun.
ReplyDeleteGlad you could smell the roses, Amy! ;-)
DeleteThe grass looks so green there! If you walk in a park or even in the palace grounds here, it is mostly yellow and brown you see, not much green left.
ReplyDeleteWater Day is a good idea to raise awareness for how precious water really is, I think.
Meike, we've been 'blessed' with a bit more rain here, I think - including some afternoon thunder showers earlier last week. And yes, the main purpose of the Water Day is to raise awareness of the importance of water. Earlier in the week, before the races, they also had divers out picking up various junk from the bottom of the river. Besides smaller stuff, an astonishing amount of bikes and shopping carts also seem to end up down there every year...
DeleteI believe my comment went into spam, or did not get through at all :-(
ReplyDeleteWhat I meant to say were mainly two things:
1) How green the grass is! If you walk around parks etc. here, most of what you see is yellow-brown.
2) Water Day seems a good way to raise awareness for how precious water really is.
Meike, I read email notices of comments this morning but didn't check until now if they had all also appeared on the blog. Still a mystery to me why Blogger keeps marking some comments as spam these days when to me there's nothing at all suspicious about them. (While others still sometimes slip through even though containing a whole row of links, for example!)
DeleteThat is a fun event, I think even watching the boat races on the rivers would have a cooling effect. Your closeups of the roses are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThanks Terra. It was a good day for it, not one of the hottest either.
ReplyDeleteKubb looks like simple fun but I bet it's highly competitive - like boules which I've played in France and New Zealand (ouch!). Some lovely pictures and flowers there too,
ReplyDeleteGraham, I'm sure it could be (competitive). I've only played a few times myself, way back in the past, like on outings with a group of friends or colleagues. And with teams randomly put together, I soon forget who won or lost!
