Thaw

Over the past few days, we've gone from really cold weather to thaw, slush and ice here. Lots of daily reports about really slippery conditions and road accidents for the whole area - and definitely not looking good for walking just outside my own windows either. It's four days in a row now that I've just been staying in. (Haven't even been out to the bins since Monday...)

The best I can hope for just now is really that it will keep on raining and thawing until the old snow is all gone, before it starts over...

Meanwhile, indoors, I have continued to take down most of my holiday decorations. But the electric candles and window stars will stay up for a while yet; and I usually also keep some red table runners and other textiles until mid February or so - for a warmer feeling while it's cold and colourless outside.

Triple reflections in my triple glazed windows...

  1. Yes, we need light and color in the winter. I love the multi-reflection of your candles!

    1. Sandra, the increasing daylight will tell me when it's time to change back to my usual lamps...

  3. Much better to stay indoors than to risk a fall on treacherous ground, when you don't absolutely need to go out.
It's been so early-spring-like here these past few days that I really find it quite odd when I come to my Mum's where much of her Christmas lights are still around, and the stars in her windows. But it is forecast to turn cold again this weekend, although as far as I am aware no snow is expected.

    1. Meike, to my relief it's kept on raining through the night, so I should at least be able to get out to the bins! ;-)

  4. Your photo of the triple reflections of the candles looks so bright and cheerful. Such a contrast to the view from your window. Not a day for outdoors.
(Google are once again letting me comment!)

  5. Carol, two days later it's still thawing away here. Some patches of green grass now to be seen as well - but still hard to know if one will be able to walk everywhere or if there will be old snow and ice lingering.

  6. Ours was so short lived, in fact it's warmed up to 5°. Think I'd like being snowed in a while (I'd bet the idea is better than reality).

    1. CK, if one has all one needs, and no real need to be somewhere else, it can be quite relaxing to be snowed in for a couple of days. But when it lasts too long, various problems and worries are likely to take over...

  7. Good idea keeping some colour around indoors, everything over Winter can look so bleak and grey.
