Houseplants

 

 I haven't got all that many houseplants left after this winter; and some of those that have survived are looking rather tired - including one of the African Violets. The lighter blue one has at the same time been in bloom, but with most of its leaves drooping and not looking well at all. I'm not sure if I managed to over-water it, or under-nourish it! Anyway, today I decided to re-pot that one (even while still in bloom) and cut off the lower drooping leaves that made it look sad and tired. Remains to be seen if that will do the trick... 

While I was at it (messing about with pots and soil), I also planted a Coleus ("painted nettle") plant shoot that has (barely) been surviving the winter on water only, in a tiny glass vase. (Bottom right in the collage.) The rest of its mother plant died back in winter... 

Behind the African Violets in the collage above, you also see a bigger glass vase with some green leaves in it.  Close-up of the same below. These are my Mystery branches, which were included in a bouquet of flowers that I got for my 70th birthday back at the end of August. Some of the other flowers in that bouquet I was able to dry and save that way. But these green branches just remained the same, and I left them standing in water just to see what would happen. The answer is: Nothing. 7½ months later, they are still standing in water, an looking just the same. They have neither formed roots, nor withered - and look and feel much like they might just as well be fake...

Google Image search has identified them as Ruscus, and further research tells me that what looks like leaves are really phylloclades - "flattened, green, photosynthetic stems or branches" - while the true "leaves" are the minute, scale-like things on the middle of those. Totally weird! But I'll continue to leave them in their vase for now, just to see if anything happens at all... 
 

In my living room window (below)  I decided to add some "properly fake" pink lilies in a coloured glass vase, just for a bit of colour, until perhaps I get some live splash of colour there...

Coleus plant brought by my friend

My friend E.A. came visiting today, and brought me this coleus plant. Very similar to the one(s) I already have; but not exactly the same:

 As I know coleus can shift quite a lot in colour depending on how much light they get (they get much paler indoors in winter) it will be interesting to see if they will continue to differ, or if they will become more alike with time.

Our original plan for this afternoon was for E to drive us both to a lakeside café on the outskirts of town. However, the weather forecasts for today turned out as threatening as yesterday (i.e. more or less predicting the end of the world by lightning and floods). So I suggested that if she was brave enough to venture out at all, perhaps a cup of tea and a muffin in my flat would be adventure enough. She accepted, and as things turned out, she even managed to get a lift with her husband rather than driving herself. (He had some errands in town and then came back to pick her up again after a couple of hours, when he was done with whatever it was he had planned.) 

Just like yesterday, lightning and floods decided (presumably) to hit on some other spot rather than just around here, and all we got was some rather ordinary rain. My friend and I both agreed that "staying home" was still a better choice for this afternoon, though.

Looking at various weather apps for tomorrow now, it seems that we may then expect warnings for temperatures rapidly rising to "too hot" instead... Ah well. As Scarlett O'Hara (in Gone with the Wind) would have said - "I'll think about that tomorrow"! 

A Rainy Day

 

As predicted, a rainy and chilly day today - but I ventured out for my usual walk anyway. (Dressed in four layers, with rain coat on top; and rubber boots on my feet!)

The azaleas didn't seem to mind a long, cold shower... :)

At home, I took in my geraniums from the balcony last night, just to be on the safe side... Probably not necessary, as they stand on the bench close to the wall - but I think I'll keep them indoors for another day or so. (I'll definitely not be sitting out there looking at them tomorrow either, according to the weather forecasts...)

"Mother and babies"

I've been taking cuttings from a coleus plant that survived the winter, and planted those yesterday. (They're super easy to propagate.) Some of those will also go out on the balcony later. I'll be keeping them in individual pots as that makes it easier to rearrange things according to the weather etc.
