Some of you might remember that back in mid October I posted about A New View in my town. Yesterday that new part of the walk along the riverside was officially inaugurated. The ceremony took place at 4 p.m., which is when darkness falls here this time of year.
Instead of cutting a ribbon, they tied one together…
… as a symbol of the new part of the walk connecting previously existing possibilities to walk along the river.
The plan is that in 2018, it will be possible to walk close to the river all the way through town, for about 2,5 km (~ 1,5 English miles).
In the old days of textile industry, the river was lined with textile mills, and chemicals from the dyeing works used to colour (and pollute) the water in the river. Now, coloured spotlights are used as a reminder of that not-so-pretty history of our town, and the changes it has gone through more recently to become more of a post-industrial centre of commerce and culture. Which, in a way, is kind of how it all began back in pre-industrial times… When the town was founded in the early 1600s, it was as a trading-site!

The lights in your town are mesmerizing. What a great walking path too. It's always great to see things change for the better.
This is a wonderful walk. I thought it looked good by day but it is stunning at night.
wanderful night photos...The path along the river is amazing... Great job...
what an amazing walk that would be at night. i love all those different hues of colors. if i could fly or float i would come see your town . and of course YOU.
I thought the idea of tying a ribbon instead of cutting one was a brilliant idea. The walk at night looks interesting and beautiful.
The lights are so beautiful! The two people walking, is that part of the new walkway? Your reflections are stunning!
Great pictures! I like the idea of being able to do a complete river walk through your town.
It certainly is, Mersad, and I for one do enjoy walking along the river where it's possible.
I did not know until the same day that they were planning those coloured lights, Adrian. But it made a great show.
Yes I think they have done a good job here, Viera.
If not for all the "ifs", Sandra... I might be fleeing the winter darkness for Florida :)
I thought that was rather clever too, Graham. Actually the whole ceremony, in spite of being kept rather simple, made quite an impression.
Yes Ginny, that's part of the new walkway you see in that picture. The other ones (with the church tower) were taken from across the river - I came that way, becaure I knew that would make the best view!
So do I, Meike. I've been wishing for years for that to happen, so happy to hear now that they have a time plan for it.
I love the effect of the different coloured lights on the water and the reason behind them.
The idea of joining the ribbons to represent the coming together of the old and the new is a lovely gesture.
The lights make all of your photos look so magical!
Wonderful ideas for my town to use. I like the colored lights, the lights along the footpath. We do have a paved path along our river which bicyclists and walkers use, but there are bums that scare people sometimes, sad to say.
