Mosaic Monday: Easter Decorations

2015-03-21 Easter decorations

These are some of my Easter decorations at home.
The cross-stich wall hanging was made by my mum.

The fluffy little chickens on the kitchen corner shelf have been with me since my childhood or teens.

And so have some of the paper eggs.

One Easter symbol that never quite took root here in Sweden is the Easter Bunny, even if they do appear now and then in imported decorations. The egg above has different images on the top vs bottom half – bunny on one side, chicken on the other. On the inside it has the stamp “Made in GDR” (German Democratic Republic) – which should mean that it’s at least over 25 years old (but not over 65!)

    1. Thanks Sandra. My mum was always doing embroidery and the house was full of it. This is one she used to have in her own kitchen for Easter.

  2. That's interesting about the bunny not really playing a role in Easter decorations in Sweden, I didn't know that. Here, apart from the omni-present bunnies and eggs, lambs and chickens feature prominently. I really like the wall hanging made by your mother. Such things have the most value, don't they! Do you know how you got to have the paper egg from the DDR?

    1. Meike, out of the seven paper eggs in my little collection, two were made "in GDR", one in "German Democratic Republic" and one "in Germany". And I would not be too surprised if the other three were made there too even if there is no text printed inside to confirm it. I think they were probably imported here and sold in various shops. I think some years we got new eggs (often from grandparents) and some years old ones may have been reused. Anyway these are the ones I've kept. Eggs of the same kind are still being sold but it's been many years since I last bought any. So I don't know if they're still made in Germany!

  3. The chickens are wonderful! Your mom was talented. I love those BIG eggs! In fact, when I saw your first picture, I thought you had snapped a museum Easter exhibit! I LOVE that rooster!

    1. I suppose by now my home is kind of a museum of my own life, Ginny! ;)

  4. I used to spend a lot of time in Germany and the Easter Bunny as BIG there and our children spent many happy hours trying to find eggs and The Bunny in the garden. I don't think it's very important in the UK but I'm sure that if I'm out of touch (my children are grown up) someone will enlighten us.
