Reflections of Light and Dark

“Art is in the Eye of the Beholder”…

Did you know?

… that the person credited with coining the saying Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, an Irish novelist whose light romantic fiction was popular throughout the English-speaking world in the late 19th century. The line occurs in Molly Bawn (1878). (More famous authors before her expressed much the same thought in other words, though…)

    1. Thanks Adrian. Sometimes it's mostly about happening to pass by at the right time, though!

    2. It is the first image that really appeals. It would be worth catching this at different times of the day, possibly even night if you have a tripod.

    3. Adrian, this is a spot I pass by quite often in the daytime - but not a path I'd choose to walk in the dark. I have taken very similar reflection photos here before - and I think I've also published some of them on the blog before. Haven't got a clue how to find them again though as I've never used any specific enough tag, and still can't think of one.

  2. I second Adrian in that.
And no, I did not know who coined that famous saying. Thank you!

    1. You're welcome, Meike :) I know I've looked up the origin of that saying before, but it's one of those things that never seems to stay in my memory. Might have something to do with the fact that I've never read any of her books...

    2. PS. I just downloaded 'Molly Bawn' to my Kindle. With all the other books already on my to-read list though, by the time I get round to this one (if I ever do) I will probably have forgotten why!

  6. Well that's certainly something different and very well spotted. You certainly have an eye for the unusual. I would never have seen that so I admire it all the more.

    1. Thanks Graham. There are certain reflection spots along the river that, once I've noticed them, I keep doing so whenever I happen to be passing by in the right kind of light...

  7. Good sculpture always makes one see things in a different way, doesn't it - even if, like this, it is non representational.

    1. Jenny, "the thing" about this place is that it is not really sculptural at all. Just the bottom of a very dull concrete motorway bridge crossing the river in central town, reflected in the water...
