Baking Ginger Snaps

 

No Christmas without ginger snaps!
Today, and 60 years ago...

 


Baking a small batch of ginger snaps today made me think of these old photos in one of my  early photo albums. The year was 1960. I'm 5 years old here. Back in the spring or summer the same year, we (my parents and I) had moved from a flat in town to a house of our own in a village nearby. The kitchen was a galley kitchen with a dining alcove. Whether mum also made her own Christmas ginger snaps while we were still living in the flat, I can't remember. But I'm pretty sure she did it every year from then on. I have baked my own most years of my adult life as well. Not quite every year, though - for one thing, there have been years when I couldn't manage it because of neck/arm problems. But I've always missed it when I've not been able to do it.

    1. Thanks Louise. It was usually dad behind the camera back in those days, but somehow it seems more likely that the baking was done on a weekday - in which case it must have been mum who took the photos. (She was a housewife, while dad worked 5½ days a week back then.)

  3. Love the wallpaper with the vegetables print, and of course your cute tartan dress! It is wonderful that you stick to making your own, I am far too lazy for that and keep telling myself I will have to start baking my own Christmas cookies at some stage, as my Mum won't be around forever (or willing and able to do it).
    Only a few weeks ago, Swedish Ginger Snaps were on special offer at my local supermarket (Aldi). I am sure they are nowhere near as good as your home-baked ones, but maybe I should give them a try.

    1. Meike, while I was still working, I quite often took a vacation day early in December (if possible) to spend the day baking. It's just always been one of my favourite parts of Advent/Christmas traditions.

  4. I love the photos of five-year-old you! And I bet your flat smells Divine love Ginger Snaps but I have never had any homemade gingersnap only the kind you buy in the store. Mother never made Ginger anyting not even gingerbread.

    1. Thanks Sandra. Besides ginger I also have clove, cinnamon and cardamom in my recipe. Ginger, clove and cinnamon are pretty much standard in Swedish gingersnap recipes, but cardamom is not always included. I love cardamom though and have been using a recipe including all four spices ever since I first started making my own back in my youth.
