It's not just bird feeders that mysteriously go missing around here. (Cf. my recent "Weekend" post.) Yesterday, when I was going to the hospital for my scan, I couldn't find my wristwatch. I only wear the watch when I go out; but especially when I'm going somewhere by bus, and/or have appointments to keep, I really miss it if I'm not wearing it. (My phone usually rests in my handbag except when I'm using it to take photos.) When I get home, I normally (automatically, by habit) take it off and put it on top of the chest of drawers in the hall. And if it's not there, I will usually find it either on the kitchen table, my bedside table, the coffee table next to my TVchair, or the desk in my study...
Yesterday, it was not to be found in any of those places, so I had to leave home and manage my bus travels and hospital appointment without it (frequently checking the time on my phone instead).
When I got back home, I resumed my search. Besides the most likely places, I also looked for it in a lot of extremely unlikely ones - but to no avail.
I also could not remember when it was that I had last worn it. Sunday, I did not go out all day. Monday, I was only out for a very short walk. I might have worn the watch then - but not necessarily. Tuesday was laundry day. I probably did not wear the watch then as I had the phone with me down to the laundry room. And last week I did not walk any further than the cemetery either, and might or might not have worn the watch... But if I did, could perhaps the wristband have broken so that I had dropped it somewhere outdoors...? It did not seem very likely, but then neither did it seem likely that I had managed to "lose" the watch within my own flat!
After another indoors search this morning, I gave up, and decided that I had better just buy a new one. My "lost" one was very far from new anyway, and of no great value. It was another sunny day without snow and ice, so a good day for errands. I went for a walk into town, to a watch shop there, and bought myself a new, cheapish, rather similar one.
After that purchase, I took a bus to the shopping centre "across town" for some other errands (more about that in some other post); and from there another bus back to the railway station, and then another 15 min walk back home from there.
Later in the afternoon, I was going to take out some garbage to the bins at the corner of the building. I opened a drawer in the hall bureau and grabbed my set of "basement" keys - which includes the keys to the laundry room and my basement storage rooms, and is on a neck strap.
As I picked them up, something came loose from the knuckled up neck strap... Guess what?
Mystery solved. Obviously, on Tuesday - laundry day - my watch had been lying in its usual place on top of the chest of drawers in the hall. Coming up from my last turn to the laundry room, I had put down the key-strap on top of it, and then when I put the keys back in the drawer, the watch had got entangled in the strap and went down in the drawer with those keys... Just a look in the drawer during my serach was not enough to detect it; and when going out yesterday and today, I used another set of keys that I keep in my handbag.
So now I have two...! (Old one, left. New one, right.)
I had to laugh, because I even said to the girl who sold me the new watch in the shop, that "if nothing else, buying a new one is probably the best way to get the old one to turn up"...
Oh dear. I would certainly mislay everything if I didn't have one particular place for each item. My wristwatch is always kept in a little silver pot on my dressing table once removed as, otherwise, I would never remember where I last saw it.
ReplyDeleteJC, in this case, even having a particular place didn't help, as it managed to disappear and go into hiding from that very spot! ;)
DeleteFor me everything is in a different compartment (with zipper if I ever need it) of my purse. I've been doing compartmentalized purses for years and don't understand why women still dig through everything each time they want something in big bags of purses. But I sometimes will put my phone down when I'm distracted...and search all over...is it in the car? is it in the house, but where? I have a tiny apartment, with lot of stuff to hide things!
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I'm usually pretty organised, but my phone tends to go "walkabout" around the flat too... One needs that thing for too many purposes these days!!
DeleteYES, it is so true! The fastest way to find something is to buy a new one!! But it is good that you have a backup, especially since the old one is ...well, old. The old one looks a bit more fashionable, but the new one looks so much easier to see and read!
ReplyDeleteGinny, to me it is the new one that looks a bit more "fashionable". I'll probably save it for use in summer when I can "show it off" more... ;) (in winter it'll be hidden under long sleeves anyway)...
Deletei have the same watch as your new one.. and I only wear it rarely. I bought it because of he 3 hurricanes. the only clocks in the house are on digital and require power. the phone can also go out. We did use it for the 7 days of no power. I put it next to where bob sits on the sofa, and we did not move it for fear of losing it... now you have a back up if you lose it again. it is always a shock to me that things can get lost and we look where they are and don't see them. happens a lot here. I lost my phone the other day and walked through the house remembering ha ha where I last sat. turns out, it was laying on the little curve to the sofa where I looked several times but it was upside down, flat black on black leather. I never lay it flat and upside down but always with shiny surface up. not this time.
ReplyDeleteSandra, what a coincidence, us having bought the same watch! I have battery clocks in every room so no need to wear a watch at home, but I put it on when I go out because that's more convenient than having to check the phone. - I have a black cover on my phone that tends to play hide and seek a lot. I put a sticker on the front to make it easier to detect... ;)
DeleteThe profundity of the two memes is evident upon reading. The occurrence of forgetfulness is not rare, being greatly influenced by one's attention span and the severity of stress endured
ReplyDeleteRo, the things we do out automatically out of habit are often the hardest to recall (did I really do it or not, on this particular occasion?)
DeleteI knew as soon as you wrote that you shopped for another that the first would show up. Murphy's law, they call that here!
ReplyDeleteDebby, I kind of knew it myself!! ;)
DeleteSame as Debby, I expected the old watch to turn up as soon as you came home with the new one! Now you have two, and can keep them in different places... or the same one, just don't hide them under other items ;-)
ReplyDeleteMeike, I half expected the old watch to just magically appear as soon as I came home with the new one... It took a few hours, though! (lol) For now, I've hung the new one on an empty nail on the wall in the kitchen. I think I'll be wearing that one more in summer. In winter no one but me will see my watch anyway as it's always hidden under layers of clothes!
DeleteIt's maddening when things disappear. It happens a lot in our house, as we are far from tidy and easily distracted. I'm pleased for you that the watch was discovered.
ReplyDeleteThanks Janice. Unless it really had fallen off my wrist outdoors without me noticing, of course it was bound to turn up eventually... ;)
DeleteThis made me laugh. It's so often true that you find things again just after you've bought a replacement. I have a lovely paper knife (for opening letters) that I find both beautiful and useful. It went missing during my house move and was missing for months, even after all my boxes were unpacked. My sister gifted me a replacement - and two days later the missing one reappeared! (Clearly jealous of the usurper.)
ReplyDeleteJenny, moving house is of course a special situation and it's not too surprising if some small item does go missing in that procedure... Glad it turned up for you, though!
DeleteIt's so true, you can mislay something and buy a replacement in desperation, then the lost one turns up!
ReplyDeleteCarol, at least it wasn't an expensive item. I kind of always preferred cheap "jewellry" because then no need to worry about it from finacial point of view... :)
