It has become a tradition for my town to celebrate its birthday (29th June)* with free cake in the main square. Never mind the weather!

*(As mentioned in my previous Friday My Town post, the town is considered “born” in 1621, as that’s when it received its first official town privileges.)
(If you don’t happen to be in town on the right day and time for free cake, there are of course also plenty of cafés and restaurants. I don’t go out to eat all that often though and the photos I may have of some of them aren’t tagged…)

i am drooling over that last piece of strawberry cake.. yuuuummmm we have a restaurant on every 4 corners, hundreds of them, i have only been i a few.....

I think I remember your post about last year's event in the rain. Free cake for everyone! Has it ever happened that they ran out of cake?

It sounds so sensible, I don't know why everywhere else doesn't do the same thing. I imagine it is a great celebration, who wouldn't be in the mood to celebrate after eating that delicious looking cake. I really like your last year's shot in the rain.
Who needs a nice restaurant when you can get free and most delicious looking cake.
I don't know, Meike! On those occasions when I've been there, on time and willing to queue for a while, I've been rewarded, though. :) The event is advertised in advance, including roughly how much cake.
Apart from the cake, the celebrations are moderate, Pauline. Tbe ceremony usually takes place in the lunch hour of a weekday and what happens besides free cake being served is that each year a new "ambassador" for the town is appointed. Usually someone already more or less famous, who during the next year will help give the town a bit of extra publicity and goodwill.
Wonderful tradition, because food is common to everybody and really brings people together.

that cake is so inviting! It must be a fun to celebrate the birthday of the town with cake thrown in.
hum.... June 29, that would be a great time to visit the Scandinavian countries.... strawberry season also. I love strawberry shortcake but haven't made it in ages. it looks delicious.
