“Then we had talked for about an hour about politics and God; for men always talk about the most important things to total strangers. It is because in the total stranger we perceive man himself; the image of God is not disguised by resemblances to an uncle or doubts of the wisdom of a moustache.”
G.K. Chesterton
The Club of Queer Trades/ Chapter 5…
The Club of Queer Trades is a collection of six short stories by G. K. Chesterton, first published in 1905. Each story is centered on someone who has invented a new and quite unique way of earning their living (a “queer trade”).
Linking to Teaser Tuesday
this is funny, i don't know any men who talk to strangers about anything, none of the ones i know and almost all the women i know talk to strangers, even men..
ReplyDeleteMy father will talk to strangers and say the oddest jokes to them, but rarely talks about something serious like politics or religion. I wonder if that generation was that much different around the publication of the stories...
ReplyDeleteIt really does look good! Are his books as good as his quotes?
ReplyDeleteHave you quit your other blog?
ReplyDeleteGreat teaser! I have just finished a book last night and so I am "between books" at the moment, the next one is already on the pile but I won't have a chance to start on it until tonight or maybe even tomorrow night.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely sounds interesting, will go looking for it.
