Phew

DSC_0035-001

This heartbreaking sight met me at the recycling station earlier this week. Is there a shelter somewhere for homeless teddy bears?? … Anyway, he was gone this morning (destination unknown) …

Today was Spring Clean-Up day where I live, which means they come with a couple of extra trucks, where (during a couple of hours) we can leave things that don’t fit in the usual recycling bins. As I still have a little bit of a walk to the recycling station (about 15 min there and back again), and can’t carry very much at a time, I spent nearly two hours this morning “recircling” myself between there and my basement storage room...

Afterwards I felt almost as tired as Teddy looks… And of course as soon as I got back to the flat after the last turn (and it was too late), I found a bag of discarded small electronics that I had spent part of the morning looking “everywhere” for in vain. (You know, the good old syndrome of putting things where you should easily find them… and then you don’t! I had almost come to the conclusion that I must have got rid of them already although I could not remember when or how!)

I wish they had these days a bit more often…

    1. There are manned recyling centres for both hazardous and other waste. It's still a problem for us who don't have our own cars... Which is the major reason why they offer this extra service at the big housing estates once or twice a year. Even so, though, people often leave all kinds of odd things (like that teddy bear) near the usual recycling bins (which are for newspapers, cardboard and plastic packages, glass bottles, food cans and batteries only).

  2. It feels good to have a clean out of bits and pieces. Refreshing for the soul. I too would feel sad if I found a cuddly bear there too.

  3. Your picture makes me think of the discarded toys in the movie Toy Story. Sad. I'm doing a bit of clutter cleaning myself.

  4. The poor teddy, I guess he was being thrown away. And he looks in such good shape. I wonder why they did not give him to a thrift store. Here, we have Goodwill stores. And we donate a lot, and buy a lot. We have a big truck that comes around a few times a year. And they will take anything you put out. Except tires. I am always straightening up and putting things in new places. Then I can't find anything.

    1. We have charity shops here too, Ginny, but I suspect there may be rules about hygiene, hard for a well-used stuffed toy to meet...

  5. Aaaw, poor teddy! I hope he is now in a good home, I am sure someone walked past with a child and the child invited Teddy to come live with them.
Our system with such items as are too big for the normal household bins works a bit different: We can "order" the company who collects rubbish for an extra two or three times a year. If we need them more often, we have to pay. The way to do this is simple; you either fill in a postcard with your address and a list of the items you are going to put out on the street for them, or you fill in a form on the internet (which is what I did). They strongly advise you against including metal and electric stuff with the other items, as these are collected separately. A few days after you have filled in the form or posted the postcard, you receive an answer with the date of "your" collection. Mine is next week Wednesday, so I'll spend Tuesday evening after work doing what you did - moving up and down from basement to street and back.

    1. Sounds like a good system, Meike. When we have these Spring Clean-Up collections, they separate electronics and hazardous stuff, metal, and things that can be burnt (the latter go into a compressor truck).

  9. Teddy does look tired indeed! Strange how we can feel so sad about a stuffed animal.

  10. Quite the capture. We have my husband's homemade stuffed giraffe in the cedar chest and his teddy bear in a glass case. They must be close to 75. The bear's 'eyes' are clouded now so we joke it has cataracts. Blessing.

    1. I still have a glove puppet in the shape of a cat since my childhood, not on display though. But I had and still have a few toys in a box that I used to take out when friends' children came to visit (they're all grown up now!)

  13. Aww...such a sweet photo! All things have a story!

I live in a quite rural area in a small town and, sadly, we have no recycling pickup and nowhere in our town to drop off recycling items! Ugh! They have to be driven to the next town over which is about 20 minutes away. Good for you for walking yours back and forth--that's a nice option with some free exercise included!
