There is an old saying that if there are a lot of berries on the rowan trees in autumn, it will be cold and harsh winter.... I hope there isn't too much truth in it!
Here, we say that when the walnut trees carry a lot of fruit it will be harsh winter. And with autumn coming so early this year, I do believe it. Not that autumn can't be very nice and sometimes more summerly than summer itself, but I would not be surprised if we got a long, cold winter this time around. The Rowan berries look beautiful. I like seeing them, same as rosehips, when I am out walking.
Yes, birds eat them. And that's part of the origin of that saying, I think. (If there is a lot of snow in winter, the birds can still find berries left on the trees.)
Meike, it's been a while since we last had a really long snowy winter in this part of Sweden, but who knows. So far it's still rather summery here even if the rowan berries is one of the signs of autumn inevitably approaching.
Never having planted one myself, I have no idea how long it usually takes for a rowan tree to start producing berries. Here it's obviously been a good year for rowan trees, though!

Gorgeous! So cheery #ThruMyLens
Wow, you have a lot! They are beautiful. I'm guessing they are not edible, but I wonder if the birds like them?

Thanks for visiting :)
For the very first time since I planted it years ago (in memory of Andy) my Rowan Tree bore some berries.
