Birdhouses and Insect hotels

On one of my recent walks around the old cemetery, I focused on spotting man made birdhouses and insect hotels - and also some natural cavities in the big old trees.

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colours,
He made their tiny wings.

(Verse from 'All things bright and beautiful')

  1. Did you notice if the bird houses are occupied?
We often spot bird and bat houses as well as insect hotels here, too.

    1. Meike, I did not see anyone fly in or out. But there are always lots of birds in those old trees - one can hear them... :)

  4. Sandra, now you have me wondering how you knew your comment would be disappearing!!? As I did receive the email copy, I went to look for the actual comment, and found that for no obvious reason, Blogger had treated it as potential spam. After 13 years of mutual friendly commenting, I can't even begin to imagine why...

  5. How nice. I have never seen these in any of our parks. You chose the perfect poem for this post as well. Have you been watching the Herriot series on T.V.? Well, maybe you do not have P.B.S. there? Or something similar?

    1. Ginny, yes, I've watched the Herriot series. Both the old one from 1977-90, and the new one from 2020-. (The old one I've seen several times, I also have that whole series on DVD.) I had to look up "PBS"... I'm not sure exactly how our television services compare but yes, we do have a public broadcasting TV service, SVT (Sveriges Television) (funded by the tax system these days). They also show many of the popular BBC TV series (including All Creatures Great and Small). We also have one ad-based TV channel that is available and free for everyone. The rest depends on your own choice and what you pay for.

  6. The birdhouses look quite different. Do you think they were put there by different people? It would be lovely to think so many people cared about the birds and the bees that they went to the trouble to build each one and put it in a place that is special to them..

    1. Pauline, I think the birdhouses have been put up at different times (and therefore also by different people), but I'm pretty sure it falls within the general maintenance of the cemetery, and is done by staff. The insect hotels are all fairly new (they only began to appear a few years ago, in parks as well as in cemeteries). New birdhouses turn up from time to time, I'm not always sure if they've replaced an old one or put one up in a new spot. (One notices them most when they are new.)

  7. Love the bird houses!
In our garden here, in Spain, we started off with a table and a couple of feeders, but found that they attracted local rats and mice, so were asked by several neighbours to take them down. I'd love some nesting boxes, but with cats regularly using the garden as a cut through, plus our "garden" feral cats that I feed (after having paid a fortune to have them sterilized and health checked), it's not practical. Last year, before we "acquired" the cats, we had a nest in the bougainvillea, with five eggs, but sadly I found two dead baby birds on the ground below. Didn't find out what happened to the other three, and didn't want to keep checking in case I disturbed the parents and they abandoned the nest.

    1. CG, on the housing estate where I live, we're not allowed to feed birds on our balconies for the same reason - that it might also attract rats. In that cemetery nearby and I think also in the bigger parks, they also have bird feeders in the winter.
