Hares

Yesterday when going for an early evening walk around the old cemetery, I came across a hare. I think it was a hare rather than a rabbit, as it was rather big, with long ears. Actually after a while I saw that there were two of them. At first they ran away from me - but when I stopped to take out my camera, they both changed their strategy and decided to stop and remain totally still, trying to look invisible instead. One of them did better than the other. (Can you detect that one in the photo above?)

I tried to remain as still as could as well. Unfortunately my mobile phone camera is not the best for zooming, but I tried...

  1. How lovely, especially the last one. Like something from Alice In Wonderland!

  2. They are hares, you're right. I spotted the second one in the first picture right away, but then my eyes are "trained" on spotting animals - I walk on the fields so often, and look for hares and other wildlife all the time. But I am less lucky than you when it comes to taking pictures of them; mostly, they dash off as soon as they spot any human (and of course there are cyclists and people walking their dogs on the fields as well, not just me).

  3. The hares seemed surprisingly tame, but perhaps they are used to people walking nearby.
On our evening dog walk on Tuesday we spotted a baby hedgehog in amongst the fallen leaves at the side of the road. It was very well camouflaged but I managed a couple of quick photos with my phone. We then hurried back home but it had gone when I returned with some food and water for it, less than ten minutes later. I think it was the same one I found in the garden, drinking the water and eating the food I put out for the cats. We have so little wildlife here, so it's a treat to see any wild animal close to.

  4. For many years (now and then) I have been seeing one (1) big hare in the cemetery, and sometimes also at night, especially in autumn/winter, coming to the lawns close to where I live, to eat grass. But now there are two of them, and my impression is that they're slightly smaller and younger. My theory is they might be the offspring of the older one (even if I never saw him/her with a partner).

There also used to be several rabbits (smaller than the hares, shorter ears, and more varied in colour) living in the cemetery; but the last couple of years I've hardly seen any of those. They were cute but also did quite a lot of damage - eating flowers, digging holes in graves etc. So I'm not sure if they moved away voluntarily or if "something was done about it"...

    1. Sandra, I have seen them there before but usually they're far gone before I even get the camera/phone out of my pocket or bag...
