Listen and Learn...

King Arthur - 12 h. * The Old Testament - 12 h.
C.S. Lewis - 6 h. * Mythologies of the world - 31 h.

I have listened to a few Great Courses from Audible in the past as well, then mostly to do with languages (Language Families of the World, The Story of Human Language). Recently I noticed that a whole lot more Great Courses about all kinds of topics are now included in my membership (i.e. free for members to listen to without using monthly credits to buy them for keeps). The above are what I've been listening to (or more correctly, have often been half asleep to) during November. While I don't expect a lot of details to stick in my memory, I'd like to think that I may still have added a little bit to my general understanding of the contexts in which those details belong. Like: how various cultures across the world (and across Time) share a surprising amount of stories with common or very similar themes, even if characters (both humans and gods) may have different names and the stories may even serve different purposes. Mythologies I'm only half way through yet - 18 hours left, and if memory serves me right I'm just about to dive into African mythology, which I don't think I've ever heard very much about at all.

(Decided to put this on the blog today because it's been an exceptionally grey and wet and gloomy day when I've not set foot outside. Needed to remind myself that I've actually not spent all of November just re-watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix for the umpteenth time (however much I also love doing that).

 Gilmore Girls: Season 1

You are amazing. Especially considering I cannot even remember what I have walked into a room to do.

Those great courses classes you chose sound right up my alley, especially the C.S. Lewis and the King Arthur courses.

I love listening to BBC Radio 4 while ironing. Many subjects from the archives of Melvin Bragg's "In Our Time" remind me of what you've been listening to.

Not so sure about The Old Testament, but the other three sound interesting.

The TV show I have watched the most over and over is Golden Girls, I think I might have seen each episode 10 plus times. Never get tired of it. I wish I could listen to things, but I just can't. I even have trouble listening to talking when there are people on the screens and even watching a documentary is beyond my skills. Bob love documentaries and might love listening to things like you do, except other subject matter, but he will not try it because he doesn't know how and will not let me set him up

Ginny, luckily listening to these lectures does not include tests afterwards... ;-)

Terra, on our first family holiday by car in Britain (1971, when I was 16) we visited the Tintagel castle ruins in Cornwall, linked with the king Arthur legends. In the 1970s I also read Mary Stewart's books based on those - The Crystal Cave + 3 more. I've reread those a few times since then, but have also read other takes on the same story. The lectures I listened to now also reminded me of how old and widespread the original legends were.

Meike, do you listen to that via radio or the internet? Way back in my youth (before computers) I remember I used to listen to pop music from Radio Luxemburg via my small transistor radio. These days there are so many options of everything between heaven and earth that I don't think checking for foreign radio (online) hardly ever occurred to me... I do listen quite a lot to Swedish radio while doing various household chores, though.

Carol, the Old Testament lectures were in fact very interesting as I felt they put things in historical context in a way I've not quite come across before.

Sandra, I remember Golden Girls, but I don't think I've seen any reruns of that series here since back in the previous century. I may not even have seen all seasons of it - not sure.

Internet; I don't have a radio. I also use it for listening to BBC Radio York.
