Two days in a row now I've chosen the supermarket as the destination for my walks - primarily because they're in the process of reorganising things, and even though I do most of my grocery shopping online with home delivery (twice a month), I also like to try and keep up with where to find things when I do go there myself.
On both my visits this week, I was too busy with reorientation to think of taking photos; so for this post I asked AI for an illustration. The one above actually comes rather close to reality - some members of staff were still busy moving things, while other people (customers + staff working with home deliveries) were trying to find them... ;-)
On the whole I'm very thankful for the possibility (since 10 years back) to have the bulk of my groceries and everyday stuff delivered, and to neither have to search for them in the store nor carry them home myself. However, there are still certain items now and then that one does prefer to have a proper look at before buying.
Christmas decorations and such have been put on display now, and I was looking for some battery candles. I don't like to to have real candles lit when going to and fro between rooms, but with battery candles one does not need to worry... I have some battery "tealights" since before, and also a couple of fake thick ones, but had decided that it might also be time for me to get some tall ones, to fit ordinary candlesticks. Yesterday I found and bought two red ones - but then back home decided that I don't want to introduce too much red before December. So today I went back and also bought two white ones of the same type, plus some batteries of rechargeable kind.
I'm quite impressed with these LED candles, because: 1/ the "flames" move and flicker, so that in the dark, and especially from across the room (like from my TV chair), it's really hard to tell them apart from live ones (except that these candles don't shrink!!); and 2/ if you don't turn them off manually, they have an automatic timer which does that after six hours, and then lights them again after another 18 hours (i.e. the same time next day).
I also bought an Amaryllis (a real one!) with three buds coming up - hoping it won't grow "too" fast (...but if it does, never mind...)

Amaryllis are so beautiful! Our grocery store just had a total remodel. It is much more open and roomy and beautiful. But now I can't find anything.
You're getting ready! I am looking forward to your gradually adding Advent and Christmas bits, your place always looks so very nice and cosy.
My Mum has been flooding her flat with similar artificial candles and tealights for years. She still uses real candles as well, but with the safe artificial ones she has quite gone over the top in my and my sister's opinion :-D But of course it is her flat, and she decides how she wants things. (Example: Instead of the two that you have on the sideboard, she'd probably have at least five on that small space!)
store reorganization is a hot topic for me. It has been several months and I still can't find half the stuff. the candles are a great find and I have not seen any like them. I like the off and on auto because I would forget them and that is why I no longer burn real candles, even in the same room. I get up and wander off and forget they are burning.
good idea to visit for just in case the internet goes down and you have to go SHOP
Apart from the fact that I've started making my Christmas cakes and my Christmas cards (I've been working on the latter for over a month) I've tried not even to think about Christmas.
Ginny, yes, that's the problem! ;) So that's why I decided to just go and explore a bit when I could take my time and did not have really urgent errands...
Meike, I'll still be lighting real candles too - for example my four Advent candles, one for each Advent Sunday, a tradition I know we share with Germany, although you tend to have them in a wreath while ours are traditionally in a straight line. But I only light those when I'll be sitting still for a while... As for artificial candles, in December and into mid January or so I will as usual have an electric candle holder (each with 7 lamps) in each of my four windows... So no real need to go overboard with TOO many more battery candles... I think... ;)
I hate it when they do a reorganisation in my local supermarket. It takes me weeks to relearn the layout and there are always odd things I can't find. It adds so much time to the shop. I still get all my stuff 'in person'. A lot of people in my apartment block get deliveries but I like to choose things for myself.
If I can avoid the supermarket at all times I do, mostly because I work in a retail store anyway and dont' want to people more than I have to so we do a click and collect service with the groceries where we order online then pick up.
Sandra, I like the automatic off/on too. It's so dark this time of year and it's nice to be able to have some extra points of light in "dark corners" in the evenings without having to worry about them.
Graham, I've not yet got started on my Christmas cards!
Jenny, yes, it's a hassle before one learns the new order of things - which is why I decided to get started when I had time to just stroll around without a long shopping list to tick off! I have no car + can't carry much, which is why the home deliveries are a blessing to me. In between those I can go myself for a few lighter items.
Amy, they have that kind of service here too, but as I have no car I'm grateful they also offer deliveries!
Since Covid, and now the hurricane disaster in our area of NC, our local grocery chain has been filling shelves, so there weren't empty shelves, but maybe lots of something that nobody was really wanting to buy. They for some reason they reorganized the crackers and cookies aisle...and after Helene they've been stocking lots, but are still out of some items. It's nice the produce stays in one place! Oh I want some of those battery candles now!
My husband and I love amaryllis! We have a red one, a white one, a pink one and a white one edged in pink! We hope they all come back this year. Sometimes, the cold gets to them, we overwinter them in the garage. LED candles are a great idea. The older I get I am more forgetful, it scares me to think of forgetting a lit candle. Light and flowers!
Barbara, that sounds a bit like during the pandemic here, and I guess it's typical of any crisis really - disruptions in both production and transport etc. And it sometimes happens here too that something is just missing for a while, reason unknown (at least to the customers). I'm thinking that battery candles are a good thing to have if there is a power outage as well (provided that one also has batteries!)
Kay, I have no place to overwinter the onions, so I always just buy new ones for Advent/Christmas.
