I wouldn't know a mussel shell from an oyster shell or a clam shell!!! But very pretty, and I'm impressed with your shell knowledge! Did you take it home?
Yes I took it home. My shell knowledge I'm afraid does not go very deep ;) ... I can only assume it is a freshwater mussel since I found it by the lake!
they used to be all over the beaches here, but now they are pretty much gone as are the fish and other shells from over population of people here. great shot.
Yes these are "wild" freshwater mussels; apparently (when I look it up) there are a few different kinds but I'm no expert. Mussels (the salt water kind) are a lot more common on the coast, especially the west coast. On a lake beach I don't usually expect to find mussel shells but on any beach by the sea I would. I'm no fan of shellfish for food myself but many people love it. Blue mussels are part of our fishing industry.

Very cool shot! I was on a beach yesterday but didn't see any neat shells. I must try another beach. :)
I love these - both in and out of the shell!
And now I want to go to the beach!
so you do have mussels, these are wild ones? You like them to eat I mean.

NZ is famous for mussels. I cook it sometimes. These ones we buy from the shops.
