I wouldn't know a mussel shell from an oyster shell or a clam shell!!! But very pretty, and I'm impressed with your shell knowledge! Did you take it home?
Yes I took it home. My shell knowledge I'm afraid does not go very deep ;) ... I can only assume it is a freshwater mussel since I found it by the lake!

Yes these are "wild" freshwater mussels; apparently (when I look it up) there are a few different kinds but I'm no expert. Mussels (the salt water kind) are a lot more common on the coast, especially the west coast. On a lake beach I don't usually expect to find mussel shells but on any beach by the sea I would. I'm no fan of shellfish for food myself but many people love it. Blue mussels are part of our fishing industry.
