Now I know…

CIMG3802

… who is moving into the Mystery Place that I strolled around exploring a couple of weeks ago, while waiting to be connected to my new broadband cable.

They were actually kind enough to send me a brochure to enlighten me. I suppose they read my blog… Winking smile

Whether by strange coincidence, or intuitive association on my part … The new tenants on these premises turn out to be none other than the local Electricity and TV and Broadband Cable companies. Yes, that’s right: The Very Important People (and Cables) that enable me to communicate with You!

Hey, I’m at a loose end here!

I have no idea what this is. It could hold the very Essence of Blogging for all I know…

This is where the Electricity Company used to reside (well, the offices anyway). The photo is copied from their website, it’s also used in the brochure informing the public about their Move. It’s an old photo showing electric cables being put down into the street at a time when the town “had at least one car” but not very many. Long before TV, not to mention the internet… I suppose a certain update might be in order!

  1. so happy you KNOW and now we KNOW too... you were right. i must say the old building has much more character... hope the essence of blogging is not in that contraption... it might not be big enough LOL

  2. Thank you for solving the mystery for us! So, next time something doesn't work with your connection, you'll just walk over there and tell 'em :-)

  3. This is hilarious and too ironic!!! One of the biggest payoffs I have seen in Blogland.

  4. P.S. We say here, "Good things come to those who wait."

  5. I like Meike's (doubtless tongue in cheek) comment that you can walk over to them when you have a problem. If it's like the UK then the 'people who help' are likely to be in another continent anyway and accessible only by phone.

  6. This is GREAT news! Now they're only a stone's throw away if you have a problem.
When my phone service was interrupted earlier this year, I walked over to the telephone exchange around the corner and asked one of the service guys for help. Calling the customer help line (in St.Lucia) would have been a nightmare.

    1. Being a stone's throw away could be very useful - if your Broadband packs up you can throw stones at them!

  7. "I have no idea what this is. It could hold the very Essence of Blogging for all I know…" You got me baffled. Tell us when you find out. Auckland is very beautiful.

  8. I'm surprised you didn't recognise the 'essence of blogging object' - it's a Thingummybob (though it could be a Wotsit in disguise).

    1. I had forgotten about Thingummy-wotsits... Refreshing my memory now I saw it spelled "thing·a·ma·jig" and it suddenly struck me that it must originally have been "thing of magic". Ha. Never thought of that before!

  9. I appreciate all the comments :)

As for the Unknown Object, my first thought was that it might be something to do with either solar or geothermal energy... But that still does not explain why they hired an English plumber to do the job! (Apologies to whom-it-may-concern... Let it be noted that it's been nearly 30 years since I last visited England.)

When it comes to being able to walk over there to get things sorted (or throw stones): First of all, this place is not that much closer to where I live than the old offices in town were. Just in another direction! Secondly, GB is at least half right: The people responsible for the actual cables are, for the most part, not the same people responsible for distributing things THROUGH the cables. With my old cable broadband, I did visit the office a couple of times, to do with the modem. With the new cable, there is no separate modem, and we have a choice of about ten different service providers. None of them has an office in this town. The one I chose does have its customer service in Gothenburg though - not on another continent.
