The Castles of Ireland
Postcrossing card from Ireland, January 2017

”You will find a host of castles in Ireland. They were fortified homes for chieftains, or Anglo Norman settlers and were designed primarily for defence. Many of these castles are medeival in origin, dating from the 11th to the 15th century. While some of the more elaborate and elegant castles you may find owe their origins to the flamboyant Georgian era or the neo gothic revival int he Victorian Age.”

    1. I've never been to any of the places where these cards came from, Diana. I travelled in England, Wales and Scotland a long time ago (back in my teens) but never to Ireland or the Hebrides. :)

    1. I'd love to see some of these places with my own eyes... if only I actually also enjoyed "the actual travelling" part... ;) (I know we feel much the same when it comes to that!)

  3. You have a nice variety of skies, some dark, possibly stormy, clouds as well as the ubiquitous blue!
And I like the amount of snow in Drenthe :)

    1. Yes, a nice sky always draws the eye, doesn't it! ;) In this case, my selection was based purely on Maria's postcard theme of the week, though (touristic multi-view) :)

  4. These are all just super!!! Funny, but when I first looked at the first one, I thought these were more places you had visited with Per! Ha ha! The standing Stones are just great! I also love the beautiful trees and all the castles, especially the reflected one. What is Shawbost? And Arnol Blackhouse? I will Google those. And get an education today!

  5. So Arnol Blackhouse is a thatched house preserved from 1880, and Shawbost is a large township.

    1. Thanks for the research, Ginny - I just copied the text that was printed on the back of the card... :) I have looked some of these things up in the past though, in connection with reading GB's blog (Eagleton Notes) and also Peter May's novels.

  8. One of the things I really enjoy about your cards is the ones which show me places like the Malta PC.
