Another sunny day with "spring in the air" feeling yesterday (although frosty in the morning), and I decided it was time to take down my ("winter") red gingham curtains in the kitchen and put up the new summer ones that I bought a couple of weeks ago. (A job also involving washing the windows in the process.)
I've actually been on the lookout for new summer curtains for the kitchen for years, without finding any (that I liked) of the shorter length that I want there. For some reason, the fashion nowadays seems to be floor length curtains everywhere - but I don't find that practical in my kitchen. (One could of course buy long ones and cut them off - I do have a sewing machine - but that's a bigger project, and also feels like a waste of fabric.)
But recently when I searched online, I found these, of the right length, and also available in a store in my town. So I went there to have closer look, and ended up buying them.
And yet another photo this morning, with a grey sky as background. Now I'm also thinking that the impression may change again once the trees outside are back to being covered in green leaves.... (In summer, from my favourite place at the kitchen table, I see nothing but green leaves when I look out the window!)

Those curtains too have a flowery pattern printed on white; but they are a thicker quality of cotton, more opaque than the new ones. I still like those too, but I've had them a long time, and somehow I feel the pattern and colours have begun to feel a bit outdated. And probably also by now a bit (gradually) faded from having been exposed to several sunny summers + washed a few times. Anyway, I felt I wanted a change - and the new ones will no doubt be staying up through this summer at least...
Luckily, I do not feel any need or wish to change the curtains in any other room! ;-)
I like both your old and your new curtains, and the tablerunner is perfect for bringing spring into your flat.
ReplyDeleteWhen I did my weekly cleaning yesterday, I put the few winter-themed items away, too, and replaced with things more in line with spring. No Easter bunnies or so just yet, though!
Thanks Meike. Nothing too much "Easter" here yet either, especially as Easter is late this year. But I changed a few more table runners to a bit more spring-like colours.
DeleteThat's such a pretty fabric. I expect the trees in full leaf will make a difference, as you say.
ReplyDeleteJanice, I'll no doubt be taking more photos to compare later on...! ;-)
DeleteI love them. I suppose you can always buy some lining and sew them on when you next take them down.
ReplyDeleteAddy, I doubt very much that will ever happen. (I'm not much of a seamstress... Shortening/hemming curtains may be within my capacity - I have done it once or twice in the past. Lining however is something that would never even have occurred to me to try...)
DeleteThey are adorable! And I really like the table runner, it is gorgeous!! I think that long curtains in a kitchen would look awful!! Don't know if I have ever seen that, but kitchens need short for sure.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny. I guess it depends a bit what kind and size and style of kitchen and windows that one has, but in mine (small and square and in a bulding from the 1940s) I do feel that long ones would just be in the way!
DeleteI really like your choices. My great windows that show sunshine in the winter will also turn leafy green with the trees right outside them...and you've reminded me that I should wash their curtains soon. Spring is almost here!
ReplyDeleteThanks Barbara :)
Deletethey are perfect, I love them see through and at night.. all my rooms have see through curtains because I can see through them, but I do have blinds if I need them. you are right, they will change with what is outside. now I can't wait to see these with the trees in leaves... I love them
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra. I do have blinds to draw as well, as can be seen in the evening photo.
DeleteDid you make those? So clever and so pretty, well done.
ReplyDeleteAmy, I did not make them, I bought them and they did not need any adjustments apart from "arranging" them. I bought the dark green ribbons separately.
DeleteThey're really pretty. I like the sheerness of them, good for summer days.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenny. I'm in the habit of changing curtains (and colour scheme) in the kitchen between summer and winter (a habit inherited from my mum who always did that too...)
ReplyDeleteSeems like you enjoy a great view from your kitchen window. The new curtains appear to have the same kind of see-through quality as your old ones so they will certainly subdue sunlight.
ReplyDeleteYP, there is another building across a lawn outside, but when I sit at the table I just see treetops, and (in winter, between bare branches) the tops of some buildings far off.
DeleteThere's a definite difference in thread density in the old vs new curtains but I agree not really of practical importance, it's more about how well the pattern shows in different kinds of light.
They look so pretty - fresh, bright and ready for the summer. I love the table runner too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol. I'm glad I got them up for March even if there are still quite chilly winds blowing outdoors.
