Today Borås celebrated its 392nd birthday. The city received its privileges in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf. The reason was to give local pedlars a legal place for vending their merchandise.
The city still known as a textile/fashion and shopping centre, its inhabitants are also still said to always be on the lookout for a cheap deal.
It is also supposed to be the rainiest city in Sweden.
Today we seemed to live up to both reputations, because how else do you explain so many people queuing in the square on a rainy day to get a piece of free birthday cake.
A true Boråsian knows how to handle an umbrella and a piece of free cake at the same time. And if you’re also a blogger, you know how to handle an umbrella, a piece of cake, and a camera… (The answer is: Go and stand under a roof outside a shop while you take the photo.)
As for my ongoing diet, please note that
1/ I had salad at home before I went out,
2/ there were strawberries on the cake, and
3/ free calories don’t count (what? do they?? oh no!)

It is a busy town. There always seems to be something going on.
Free cake is not fattening just as free wine doesn't make one drunk.
Oh Monica, you've cracked me up with the last paragraph!
Wow, you actually got a piece!! Was the line really long and was it given out all day, maybe in several locations? I cannot imagine how much they had to make! Oh, I see bouncys, this much have been quite a celebration, too bad about the darn RAIN!!!
Ooh cake....I'm there already.
Glad you enjoyed the festivities despite the rain.
When I became a blogger, I became quite a pro at handling my camera as well as other stuff like driving (sshhhhhh), eating, handling a dog on a leash, etc.
Of course you had to eat the cake. I'm thinking about the many people who must have worked so hard to produce so much cake for the celebrations and how devastated they would be if no-one wanted to eat it.
'Free calories don't count' - I love that.
The cake shot with the people in the background is a great one.
Ah. So you did go out after all! Love the shots and the cake and the saying (which is, of course, a well know truth).
A short ceremony at 1 pm and then they started serving the cakes. There was supposed to be "30 metres" of it. The "queue" was a bit haphazard as it was crowded but also several people to help with the serving. I don't think I had to wait more than 10-15 minutes.
These kinds of events are good for business in the city centre. Not least on a rainy day as people seek shelter in the shops while waiting!
:)
Sometimes I wish I had an extra hand, Virigina :)
That sounds like a good excuse for a lot of occasions, Pauline! :)
Thanks John. Rather pleased with it myself considering the circumstances!
Yes Graham. At 12:20 it seemed to have stopped raining. It started again five minutes later but then I was already dressed (in waterproofs) and ready to go. I took the bus into town though.
Don't you know Rule 5 of my diet plan. Calories don't count when you are standing!!! So eat on..and enjoy. Those strawberries look fantastic.
