Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

CIMG4147

The last few days have been quite an astonishing mix of misty autumnal mornings vs. warm and summery afternoons. It’s almost like being in two different climates on the same day.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.

  1. What a wonderful, evocative post, full of the sights and beauty of the seasons. ALL the pictures are gorgeous, but if I had to choose, it would be the first three. I love the combination of the fall leaves with the little daisies. And is that a railroad crossing in the fog? That should be on the cover of a mystery novel, perhaps Sherlock Holmes...

  3. Strange. I thought I'd commented on this because I love autumnul colours and mists and you have illustrated Keats (one of my favourite poets) so well. Then I remembered that I went to look up the butterfly but, not having my books with me, got sidetracked on the internet site I use. Attention span of a gnat, that's my problem.

  4. Graham, the butterfly is a Small Tortoiseshell. There was an incredible amount of those in my 'Butterfly Park' at the beginning of September. 70-100 or so 'born' within a few days, it seemed. See a post entitled Butterfly Invasion at my other blog. Now, a month later, only a few lingering on.
