This old chest is probably from the 1800s. It's on display at the House of Emigrants museum in Växjö, Småland. Chests like these were used by emigrants who left Sweden back then to seek a new life in America - by ship to an unknown future. (I suppose many chests were a bit simpler than this one though.)

I'm sure not all of them were of equal quality to this. But on the other hand, many chests were decorated and made special as they were often made as bridal chests (hope-chests) and with the purpose to last a life-time. (And the one piece of furniture brought by emigrants, as it could be used to pack everything else.)
