I've spent a lot of time looking at that photo because it looks, at first glance, that the bike has two saddles.

Sandra, I had to check! But I only took one (+ one of a sign with info about it). This statue stands in Ulricehamn, a small town which was our last stop on the way back from our summer holiday (so I had been snapping myself silly for a whole week already). The artist's name is Wanja Håkansson; and the statue depicts a pedlar selling items made of tinplate, which was an important industry in the town from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s.

Graham, I see only one saddle? - but two luggage carriers. The statue depicts a pedlar selling items made of tinplate, which was an important industry in the area (Ulricehamn) from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s.

There is only one saddle as you say. However when I first looked I was confused because his left hand seemed to be resting on a saddle.

Ah yes - I see what you mean now. The handlebar does look a bit odd - at least seen from the angle in this photo. (I only took one photo, and can't remember if it also really was an unusual shape.)
