Booking Through Thursday: Age-Appropriate (?)

 http://btt2.wordpress.com/2011/05/12/age-appropriate/
Do you read books “meant” for other age groups? Adult books when you were a child; Young-Adult books now that you’re grown; Picture books just for kicks … You know … books not “meant” for you. Or do you pretty much stick to what’s written for people your age?

I don’t think I ever cared all that much about age groups.

Not that I think I started reading adult books extremely early; I guess from my early teens or so. (I think my mother rather encouraged it; she read a lot herself.)

I still enjoy reading or re-reading classic children’s books or young-adult books from time to time (even at age 55+). I  can’t say I have kept up to date with that kind of literature from more recent years though – except for the Harry Potter series and a few others in that genre.

On the other hand, I can’t really claim that I’ve been able to keep up to date with literature written for my own age-group either!

  1. i came home from the library with what looked like a really good book, i started to read and about 30 pages in, i thought this is a little strange, it reminded me of my Nancy Drew books. looked at it again and it was written for young adults. i found i could not read it, but back when younger i scoffed up the drew books. i to started with adult books in my early teens, most romantic historical, as i got older and found out life is not happily ever after, i went to the mysterys

  2. Your reading sounds a lot like mine! I don't pay a great deal of attention to age groups. Hope you'll stop by my BTT post:

  3. I must admit, I'm a compulsive re-reader of the classics.

  4. I occasionally dip into old books I had as a child for nostalgia's sake. Sometimes I wonder what age-group some books are written for: His Dark Materials being one that springs to mind.

  5. GB, yes I'd say fantasy perhaps more than any other genre tends to transcend specific age-groups. I think I recall that you liked the Dark Materials, whereas I did not; but the question I think is valid either way. It was marketed for children but I think Pullman has denied targeting it for a specific age group. I think I'd classify it as a children's book but with implicit subtexts/references not likely to be understood by them.
