For Scriptor Senex

Scriptor Senex’s ramble today reminded me of this rather astonishing experiment, which I managed to re-find with a little help from our friend Google:

The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid

Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno’t mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!

Some of the emails circulating this information say that only 55 out of 100 can read it but I’m not sure if that figure originates from the same research. My guess is that most experienced readers won’t have too much trouble with it.

Anyway, it might be a comfort to know on such days when our fingers don’t quite seem to obey our intentions.

  1. i have always been able to read it and that is a little scary that my eyes and mind can read what looks like gobbledy gook. my problem is that when i type now i spell like this because i can't remember how to spell the simple words.

  2. Like Sandra I have no problem with that. Also like Sandra if it wasn't for the spillchucker I'd be in difficulties too. When CJ/Scriptor and I are doing crosswords I think he gets quite frustrated by the fact that his brother (who used to be a good speller) can barely spell his own name sometimes.
